Appoint Burton Steward For Randall Park Meet Well-Known Official to Take Up Duties at Session Opening July 27 CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 29.— Appointment of Fred Burton, well-known racing official, as the first of Randalls three-man board of stewards for the 44-day meeting which opens on July 27, was announced today by Saul Silberman, president of the Randall Park Jockey Club. Burtons 50-year affiliation with the turf spans service in all branches of the sport with the exception of starting races. Beginning as an exercise bdy at the age of 10 back in 1901, the new Randall steward has amassed a rich background in the sport of kings. Burtons present assignment finds him serving as racing secretary at the newly-opened Waterford Park oval in West Virginia. He also is racing secretary at Keene-land, Churchill Downs and Charles Town. A member of a racing family, Burton was a top-notch race-rider between 1905 and 1910. He started riding for his father, who operated a sizable stable. His two biggest thrills as a jockey came when he scored aboard Mystified at 150 to 1, and in 1908 when he piloted Synchronized to fourth money in the Kentucky Derby. When weight caused him to abandon the saddle, Burton turned his attention to learning the art of writing conditions for races. After serving as an assistant to an assortment of racing secretaries, Burton reached the top in 1934 when he was named secretary at Dade Park. Since then he has served at most of the major tracks east of the Mississippi. He has also served as steward at a variety of tracks and in that capacity has won a reputation among jockeys as being a rigid but fair enforcer of the rules of racing.
