EDDIE COBB — Drives Royal Man in the Aurora Downs Pacing Derby tonight. Renew Aurora Pacing Derby on Holiday Card Royal Man Returns to Midwest To Compete in ,000 Offering AURORA DOWNS, Aurora, HI.— Royal Man, one of the most consistent pacers in the nation, returns to the mid-west to test his ability in the sixth annual Aurora Downs Pacing Derby Wednesday night. Owned by Eddie Cobb, Washington Court House, Ohio, seventh leading money earning driver in the country, Royal Man will be driven by Harry Burright in the Pacing Derby. The veteran 11-year-old Bonnycastle — Lady Hal bay gelding entered the winners circle for the first time this season on May 21 at Buffalo Raceway in their Inaugural Pace. In doing so. Royal Man toured the Western New York half-mile oval in the good time of 2:06%. In the 1 1-6 miles half of the stake, Royal Man finished fifth behind Gallant Spencer which covered the distance in 2:15%. A total of 13 horses declared in for annual Derby, the largest field to race for the coveted ,000 purse in the history of the event. Little Judy walked off with top honors last year while Jerry The First took the trophy in 1949 and 48. Purdue Hal and Dr. Stanton were twin victors in 1947 while Forest Ranger annexed the inaugural Derby in 1946. The 13-horse field, going two mile trips, consists of Royal Man, Guest Star, Mr. Dale, Hand Book, True Neil, Chief Mite, John Lee, Miss Castle, Chief Strong, Tempered Volo, Grattan Truax, Court Lawful, Captain Point. The combined earning power of this field totals 93,472. Royal Man tops the lists as the leading money winner of this group. Including ,500 earned this season, the Cobb-owned sidewheeler has racked up a mark of 4,406. Miss Castle, owned by the B. J. Stables, Buffalo, N. Y., drew the pole for the first dash while Captain Pointer, owned by the Lesota Tool Co., Albert-Lea, Minn., grabbed the rail for the final trip. Royal Man drew 2-12, while other outstanding horses such as Chief Mite picked 12-5, Guest Star 4-4, True Neil 9-6, Mr. Dale 6-3, John Lee 13-2, Hand Book 8-10 and Tempered Volo 5-8. Only four horses in the Derby havent moved into the charmed circle this season. They are Miss Castle, Chief Strong, Tempered Volo and Court Lawful. True Neil holds the best time for the meeting, having covered the course in- the bristling time of 2:06. Post-time for the first race is 8:30 p. m.
