► j HARRY TROTSEK — Sent out Hasty House Farms Ruhe to win the Narcissus Handicap and the same stables Roman Bath to score in the Crusader Purse on Saturdays Lincoln Fields program. Third to Finish; Hasty House Gains Double As Roman Bath Also Tallies By J. J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 31.— The Hasty House Farms four-year-old Ruhe went down in turf history as the first winner of the Narcissus Handicap when he won the initial running of that event today. It was the geldings- first victory since last summer, and likewise the first in the silks of his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Allie Reuben, who recently purchased him from Mrs. Emil Denemark. Admirably handled by jockey Johnny Adams, Ruhe came from behind to catch Andy B. W. in the stretch and win by two lengths from his stable companion. Seaward, while Andy B. W. easily saved third place. There were but two other contestants, Dr. Ole Nelson and Torch of Iran, who were beaten off. The race was run over a track that had been deadened somewhat by the intermittent showers and the winners time for the mile and a sixteenth was 1:45%. The winning entry paid .00. Ruhe was starting for the sixth time this year. He had been second in all but one of his previous starts and had been favored each time. However, it seemed as if today he found a rider to his liking, and he responded nicely when called upon for his best. His success was worth ,250 net. Because but four interests were represented and two of the contestants seemed to have but little chance, there was no place or show betting, thereby avoiding what would have been a minus pool. The handle on the race was 18,693, which was deemed very good. 26,534 Attend Races A crowd of 26,534 attended todays sport, and the weather was pleasant enough at the outset but rain began to fall after the first race, and although it ceased coming down in volume a light drizzle continued most of the day to render the racing strip rather soft for the latter part of the card. Andy B. W., second choice in the wagering and the winner of. the Fleming Memorial at six and one-half furlongs here last Saturday, went out to make the pace and soon drew clear of the field with Torch of Iran in closest proximity around the first turn and into the backstretch. Seaward was in third place and Ruhe was being hard held in fourth position. Nearing the far turn Seaward replaced Torch of Iran as the runner-up, but it was not until the stretch turn approach that Adams turned Ruhe loose. As they started down the long home lane Andy B. W., clinging tenaciously to his ever-diminishing advantage, hugged the rail, with Ruhe moving up to second place* An eighth from home Ruhe got to the front, and with Andy B. W. weakening, Seaward had little trouble moving into second place. As they came to the wire Ruhe drew out under his jockeys light flicking with the whip, and although Seaward was gaining, he held his lead. The success of Ruhe made it a double on the day for the Hasty House Farm, who won the secondary feature with Roman Bath. Allie Reuben, owner of the stable, was on hand to witness the success of his pair of runners. Hasty House Farms Roman Bath won his first race since being successful in the Crete Handicap last May, when he took the honors in the Crusader, secondary feature on todays bill. Making his third start of the year, the five-year-old son of Roman finished a half length before Flya-manita, filly champion of the Chicago area two years ago, while the sprinting Stare-case was third and The Gink, fourth, in the seven-horse field. Roman Bath" was the favorite and paid .40. He was ridden by Ken Church and it was the boys second success of the afternoon. The distance of the Crusader was six furlongs, and Roman Bath was all out to make the purse. In fact, he might not have done so had not Flyamanita raced very wide while making her move. Flyamanita, who raced with little success in California last winter, was making her second start of the meeting and showed an improved effort. After Starecase and -Asphalt had made the pace, Roman Bath and Flyamanita moved up nearing the stretch turn. Both went out on the bend, but while Roman Bath did not lose so much ground, the filly went to the middle of the track. The pair were about even at midstretch and battled it out to the finish. The good filly Bella Figura triumphed for the first time in three starts this year when she took the honors in the Domino Purse, which came fifth on the bill. Apprentiqe John Heckmann, riding the daughter of Count Fleet in different fashion, took her back early and she was many lengths back of the leaders during the backstretch run. She closed up when called upon, however, and with only the pacesetting longshot, Fancy Step, to catch after entering the stretch, wore her down to win by two lengths. Bella Figura, carrying the silks of Brownell Combs, was a well-played favorite and payed .60. Bella Figura was the second winner of the day for apprentice Heckmann, he having been successful with the, three-year-old filly Amer-Ram in the third. Amer-Ram held Famous Corner in a driving finish, with the favored Victoria Cross being third. My Dividend, who was but mildly supported, was up in time to win the fourth race under the guidance of jockey Anthony Skoronski. It was a dead heat to place between Lucky Codine and Like Hover. All three horses came from behind. Favorite players got off to a good start when Specific won the opening race. The gelding, who is allergic to paddocks, was saddled on the track, but he failed to display his fiery temperament either at the post or in the running. He was well placed early by apprentice Ronnie Baldwin and catching the pacemaking High Flavor in the stretch, won by two lengths from the latter. It was the first win since Gulfstream Park for Specific, who was a beaten favorite last time out. The five-year-old gelding, Jamal, tow-roped the field in the second and paid 9.40. Jockey Ken Church hustled the E. J. Bilko racer to the front soon after the start and he won by five lengths. Jamal registered by a like distance at this track about one week ago. Auto Message was second, and Royal Vulcan came from last place to be third, with the favored Boga-lusa. fourth.
