Miss America Stakes to Headline Next Saturdays Lincoln-at-Hawthorne Card Biddy Jane Heads Excellent* Roster of Thirty-Two Fillies Eligible for the 0,000 Race HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 31.— In 1948 when the Lincoln Fields Racing Association decided to restrict the Joliet Stakes to two-year-old colts and geldings exclusively, a new stake, the Miss America, was established for juvenile fillies and had its inaugural running that year at Washington Park. The quality of the race is indicated by the class of its f irsrt four winners —Miss Sal K., Miss Stephanie, Juliets Nurse and Princess Lygia. The fifth running of the Miss America comes up next Saturday, June 7, the semifinal week-end of the successful Lincoln Fields meeting here at. Hawthorne. Some of the best fillies to appear this year, including J. R. Collins Biddy Jane, are among the 32 young lassies to be nominated for the Miss America, racing secretary L. C. Bogenschutz announced today. Biddy Jane, a chestnut daughter of Psychic Bid, out of Melva Jane, by Wise Counsellor, won the Rancocas Stakes at Garden State last Wednesday for her third consecutive victory and her fourth win in seven starts. In two others she finished second and was unplaced only once, her first start, when Wise Scholar beat her and others in a division of the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes on March 3. Other winners in early two-year-old events who are among the Miss America nominees are: Clifford Lusskys Tuonine and Gifted Gal, B. W. Landys Vibrate, Mrs. T. M. Pruetts Vezlark, w. O. Smiths Barbara L., Mrs. Herbert Herffs Mimi Mine, Mrs. H. J. Damms Arab Actress, Douglas M. Davis Admirals Wave, and S. I. Crews Celtic Play. Landy also nominated The Baroness, ► : own sister to Spur On. She was a ,300 yearling purchase at the Keeneland sales in 1951. Her stablemate, Vibrate, won at Oaklawn oh March 20, beating Barbara L., who had previously defeated the Landy filly at the Hot Springs track on March 3. Barbara L. came back to win another on March 28 before leaving Arkansas for her campaign in the North. Mooers also nominated Orofino, along with Gifted Gal. The latter won the Run-nymede Purse at Keeneland on April 12, beating Hal Price Headleys Aerolite, who later won a division of the Lafayette at the Lexington track. Orofino finished third to the colts, Happy Carrier and Ace Destroyer, in the second division of the Lafayette, Ace Destroyer later won a division of the Bash-ford Manor at Churchill Downs. Like Vezlark and August Mucklers Grecia, another Miss America nominee, Orofino, is a daughter of the Italian stallion, Vezzano, now standing at Mereworth Stud in Kentucky. Two of the Miss America candidates won on the same day, May 28, at this meeting to break their maidens. Admirals Wave beat Smart Cookie, Burnt Look, and others, while Tuonine was a handy winner over Belle Revoke, and others two races later. Arab Actress, a daughter of Burg-El-Arab — Center Stage, won the -Helens Babe Purse on May 22 after having won previously at Louisville. The Kentucky breeder, Leslie Combs n., nominated five for the Miss America. They include a couple of unnamed fillies who will not start. Also Honey Please, Sly Wink, and Chicken Sadie. All but the latter are owned jointly by Combs and James Bohatinon, while Chicken Sadie is the property of Combs and Hamandy Farm. * Other Miss America nominees are: Mrs. O. S.
