Ohio Derby at Cranwood Taken by Carters Pride Bielen Has Victor in Van Most Of SVay; 7,703 Patrons on Hand By VV. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent CRANWOOD PARK, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, May 31. — M. Carter and J. Johnsons Carters Pride raced to a strong victory before a crowd of 7,703 in the tenth running of the Ohio Derby today. Piloted by jockey Stanley Bielen, the winner was one and three-quarters lengths better than A. W. Messersmiths Scrub. The latter, in turn, was a neck in front, of T. Dunns Dr. Noddy, with H. M. Simpsons One Piece fourth, another three and one-half lengths farther back. Ideal racing prevailed throughout the afternoon and those who fancied Carters Prides chances, were rewarded with a pay-off as second choice to Dr. Noddy in the betting. Carters Pride and Bielen covered the one and one-eighth miles in 1 : 54% and in so doing shaved a full second off the record that was set here on October 6 of last year by Miss Gee Du and made it a front-running-victory most all the way. Another record was established with the event of the Derby when 0,986 passed through the machines in wagering on the outcome of the race.
