4 YILDIZ — Returned to his winning ways in the Brandywine. Yildiz Captures Brandywine for First Success Since Tally in 1951 Flamingo Leads Little Imp Half Length* Over Sloppy Delaware Park Track; Only Six Face Starter By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., May 31. — It. was a long time between stakes, but Mrs. Walter Jeffords Yildiz got back in the winners circle with a half-length victory t in. the Brandywine Handicap here today, his first score since the Flamingo in 1951. C. H. Emeritts Little Imp was a surprising second in the small field, a head before J. Gavegnanos Joey Boy. Mully S., War Poppy and Three Rings completed the Brandywine line-up which lost much of its interest when the overnight favorite, County Delight, was scratched. Under jockey Ronnie Nash, Yildiz, a four-year-old Mahmoud — Ace Card colt, ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1:46 and paid 1.20 to his backers. The track was extremely sloppy and rain fell steadily throughout the 1 early part of the program, holding the attendance down to an estimated 15,000. With County Delight out of the contest, Joey Boy was made the favorite and led until just before the finish, but he was also responsible for killing any chances War Poppy and Mully S. had when he carried , both horses wide at the stretch turn. For Mrs. Jeffords it was her second Brandywine victory in succession, her Post Card dead-heating Cochise in last years renewal. Only yesterday William Gdadby Loew had a repeater in the Christiana Stakes. Yildiz earned ,350 for her owner for his first start since the Widener at Hia-leah this winter where he raced five times before this afternoon, earning one second and two thirds. One of the biggest surprises of the race was that Three Rings was sent to the post on such an "off" track. For years he, had been completely tabbed as having a definite aversion to an "off" strip. He proved it again today, winding up a well beaten last, some 20 lengths of fthe leader. Mrs. Jeffords was awarded the Brandywine trophy after the race, the presentation being made by Mrs. Robert Gibb of Far Hills, N. J. The rain that had slashed across the track and stands for the first couple of races ceased by the time of the feature and when the field broke in front of the stands, Joey Boy outran his opposition to the turn. Three Rings stayed up with him for a while, but then soon dropped to last. Down the back side it was Joey Boy before War Poppy, with Yildiz, Mully S. and Little Imp next. Joey Boy continued on the lead rounding the turn but coming into the stretch carried out War Poppy, who had moved up to challenge, while Mully S., who was on the extreme outside, also had to move over. War Poppy was through after that and Mully S. lost ground. The maneuver let Yildiz and Little Imp through, the latter down on the rail. Both set sail for Joey Boy and right at the wire Yildiz got the best of it over Little Imp, while Joey Boy held on well, beaten only by a small margin.
