— - . Grimm Replaces Holmes As Manager of Braves CINCINNATI, Ohio, May 31 UP. — Tommy Holmes was fired today as manager of the Boston Braves and veteran Charley Grimm given a two-year contract to replace him. Holmes burst into tears when he was fired by long: distance telephone. Grimm was reluctant to take the job and it took two telephone calls to persuade him. Braves general manager John Quinn said Holmes would remain in the Braves organization. Holmes, who was appointed manager during last season, "doesnt have enough experience for the job," Quinn said. "We still think the world of him," he added. Holmes is a Brooklyn boy and a former Braves star. He was managing Hartford, Conn., a Braves farm team, when he was called in to replace Billy Southworth as Braves manager. But the team did not prosper, either at the gate or in the standings. "So we had to make a change," Quinn said. Grimms appointment was something of a surprise since he said only last month "I have no desire to return to ~ the major leagues." The veteran baseball man has been serving as manager of the Milwaukee Brewers in the American .Association.
