Suffolk to Provide Free Vaccine for Inoculation Take Precautioning Measure Against Equine Sleeping Sickness BOSTON. Mass.. May 8— Suffolk Downs will provide vaccine for the innoculation ot horses against encephalomyletis or equine sleeping sickness during its approaching spring meeting, judge John C. Pappas. president and general manager of the East Boston track, announced today. This precautionary measure will not be mandatory in Massachusetts but the vaccine and its innoculation will be made available to owners who wish to have their horses innoculated. The Suffolk Downs veterinarians. Dr. James F. OConnor Ji. and Dr. Emanuel F. Coyle. have volunteered their services to apply the vaccine without fee. Although Suffolk Downs will provide the vaccine free of charge and the track veterinarians will donate their services to those interested, horsemen may have their own vets inject the vaccine provided by Suffolk should they so desire. Owners and trainers at Suffolk during the spring meeting will be notified of the availability of the vaccine and of the services of the veterinarians. Pappas said that he hoped horsemen will take advantage of this program because both track managements as well as horsemen hope to help eradicate the disease. Pappas is chairman of the TRA committee to study sleeping sickness and has been a leader in racings campaign to conquer the disease. He said he was pleased to learn that the American Veterinary Medical Association has cleared the horse as a transmitter of the disease.
