The daily average mutuel handle soared to ,050,806 which was an increase of 21,916 or 13 per cent over the 28,890 figure for the corresponding meeting in 1956 and only slightly off the all-timetime annual average of 056,957 set at the track in 1954. Daily average attendance was 12,120. up 610 per day or 5 per cent over 1956, when the meeting was 17 days. The weather as a whole for the spring of the year was goad, with the increased patronage resulting. The biggest day, attendance-wise, was Saturday, April 6. when 20.721 fans passed through the turnstiles and wagered ,588,807. In the mutuel department the highest was ,-733,538 on April 15, the day on which the Chesapeake Trial was run. Second high in this respect was the ,715,431 wagered on April 20 when the Chesapeake was the feature attraction. The crowd on Chesapeake day was 20.602. second best of the session. Daily average purse distribution was 9,448. up from the 7,529 figure for 1956. Purse distribution grossed 71,465 and netted 54,000. Seven Stakes Decided Seven stakes were decided, with the Laurel Handicap on April 27 the richest. This event was won by Cedar Farms Cedrus who earned a net of 0,400. This win, plus a second and a third, gave the Warlock — Cedar Lady four-year-old a total of 1,900 for the meeting and first place among the money winning horses at the session. Second on the list was Inswept, the Chesapeake winner, who took down 9,925 in prizes. Aeschylus, winner of the Laurel Spring Turf Handicap on closing day. plus an overnight race, ranked third with 1,145. Cedar Farm of Mr. and Mrs. John Bromley led the owners with 6,575. Second high in this column was the Roslyn Farm of G. W. Thompson, owner of Inswept, second with 4,800, followed by Perne L. Grissom with 0,900. Apprentice Howard Grant beat out the veteran Joe Culmone for riding honors at the meeting. 27 wins to 25. Grant accepted 157 mounts. 10 more than Culmone. The latter turned in the best riding feat in the 29 days operation, riding four winners out of seven mounts on April 27. The Bond brothers, Bernard P. and J. Bowes, just about monopolized the trainers standings, with the former saddling 15 winners and Bowes 11. Dave Zakoor Jr. ranked third with 10. The largest Daily Double payoff of the meeting took place on opening day when the combination of Soldier Son and Nyach returned 01.40. The second high Double was 01.40, the payoff when Night Mission and Queens Flight scored on April 23.
