Bfmandv 1 In The Blue Grass By Hugh J. McGuire Weigh Derby Result in Terms of Breeding Think Calumet Just Plain Lucky This Time Gallant Mans Dam Rates Equal Recognition LEXINGTON. Ky., May 8. — The main topic of conversation here in the Blue Grass is. as it must be in other quarters, the recent Kentucky Derby but the discussion extends beyond the race and into breeding. Here where the abilities of Ben and Jimmy Jones have always been recognized and where the knowledge of the tremendous farm operations of Calumet back of the racing scene has removed any resentment that might form over the frequency of Calumet success in the Churchill Downs classic, it is generally felt that this year Calumet was just plain lucky. This thought is prompted both by the fact that it was the secondary hope Iron Liege who carried the mail and the unexpected assist from Willie Shoemaker. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde E. Buckley of Hiddenaway Farm, own the mare Red Carnation who is a half-sister to Iron Liege. Red Carnation, who is by Sun Again, has a yearling colt by Oil Capitol or Greek Ship and the youngster has been entered in the Keeneland summer sales. .Red Carnation is half-sister to another mare of distinction in Iron Reward who is the dam of Swaps. Certainly this sales colt need make no apology for his kin. Brown Acquired Ago Khan Broodmare On the basis of the narrow margin separating Iron Liege and Gallant Man at the end of the Derby, most observers are of the opinion that Gallant Man would have been the winner had Shoemaker not erred in misjudging the finish line. By this reasoning. Majideh. dam of Gallant Man. is entitled to equal recognition for her part in producing Gallant Man. Majideh is by Mahmoud and was purchased by Joe W. Brown from the consignment of the Aga Khan sold at Keeneland through the local management of the Crown Crest Farm in 1954 for 0,000. This was the same sale at which Majidehs daughter Masaka fetched 05,000. At the time of her purchase. Majideh was in foal to Tudor Minstrel and the resulting filly foal now is a two-year-old with the Brown racing stable in New York under trainer John Theall. This miss showed well here at the Rookwood Farm of Mrs. Jack Howard where the Brown breeding stock is quartered. Majideh was barren the following year but had a fine colt foal in March this year by Daumier. She has been bred to Arctic Prince who is making his first American season at the Spendthrift Farm of Leslie Combs II. It will be seen from this that Brown has continued mating Majideh to imported stallions rather than the domestic variety. Brown has another mare at Rookwood who has some association with Gallant Man. This is Merida who is now in foal to Gallant Mans sire Migoli and is due to foal any day. This mare was purchased abroad and is a stakes winner by Jock II. — Torissina. Jock II. is by Asterus and Torissina is by Tourbillon. Merida was bred by Marcel Boussac and she has been booked to Hill Prince who stands at Claiborne Farm. Prince John Gets Top Matings Getting a stallion off to a good start at stud is of prime importance and Bob Green, manager of Elmen-dorf. tells us that Prince John has been given some excellent mares for his first season. Three of the mares going to Prince John are in the news just now. Little Spooky is the dam of Ellis Farms Little Pache. a handy winner of the Red o Roses Handicap at Jamaica last Saturday under top weight of 121 pounds. Hipparette. a full sister to Menow, is the dam of Hal Price Head-leys Pillow Talk who won the Oaks Prep and was second in the Kentucky Oaks. Tall Weeds, in winning the Ashland, beat Wistful, dam of Gen. Duke, the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby. The mentioned trio of mares just happen to be topical at this time and Prince John is to get many other select matrons. A few of these are Banta. a half-sister to Delta and Levee; Elmendorfs own My Blue Sky whom the farm considers the best of the get of My Request to date; Boss Well, a stakes producer from the family of Decathlon and a half-sister to Dark Charger; the track record breaker I Declare; a full sister to Occupation and Occupy named Braeh: Shoe Buckle, a half-sister to Roman, and many others. Blades of Blue Grass: Derby Day was the birthday of a filly foal by Tiger — Wither Wander. The newcomer is a full sister to TigerWander and is the property of Mrs. Helen Fortune. . . . T. Owen Campbells Elmhurst Farm has a small but particularly appealing sales consignment this year. The three colts and one filly are all from stakes-winning or stakes -producing mares. . . . The Stallion Stations stallion Daumier had his first American-bred winner in Daunissa, long-priced winner at Garden State. . . . Only a year ago experts were commenting on how much smoother Shoemaker looked on a horse than Hartack.
