! . ... SPORTS CLOSE-UPS By Ira Seebache, NEW YORK, N. Y., May 8.— Certainly not all the countrys track talent has been concentrated in the East though in recent years the Eastern schools have been blessed with more than their share. Whether this is just the way chips fall or because some of the eastern powers have proselyted a little to help in upsetting the normal balance, is an argument we wont go into here. Certain it is that schools such as Man hattan, N.Y.U., St. Johns have been perennial powers. Even so, the concentration is changing even under the artificial conditions that prevail. Some of the haves are joining the list of the have-nots and a few have-nots, particularly Villanova, have shoved very much onto the list of the haves. The notable recent changes have been at N.Y.U. and Fordham. Last Saturday the Metropolitan intercollegiates — was a runaway for Manhattan, whose athletes scored a record total of 140 points. Their rivals, in total, scored less trmn 100. N.Y.U. with 36, Fordham with 7 and Iona with 2. jointly made fewer points than did second place St. Johns. So in New York and its environs, the preponderance of material at Manhattan is overwhelming. Manhattans freshman team served notice matters will not be easier in the coming years. The Jaspers are loaded again. Since this is the eighth straight year that George Eastments squad has won this meet, it is : beginning to be apparent that he hasnt I any intentions of relaxing his grip on it in the next eight years, if possible. Changes in scholarship set-ups have hurt N.Y.U. and Fordham. Theyd like very 1 much to continue the great track and field i heritage they enjoyed for so many years, i but it is evident there is little the coaches ; of these respective schools can do about it. | Theyve been chopped to size while Man-j hattan strides the scene with overwhelming j stature. The subconscious mind presents as complicated and indecisive a study as any field of scientific research man has ever tackled. It is a study that leaves many unconvinced even when findings are published. Thus we do not, the rank and file of us, believe it is possible to forecast the future. Yet there have been people who have had dreams of coming events and these foreshadowings have come true, often in great detail. How this happens, even the scientists cannot be sure. There is an explanation, however, that might satisfy some. This is that if we can imagine a certain set of circumstances and worry about it for a length of time, we may then dream about it. If later, and by coincidence, matters work out just the way we envisioned them, and worried about them, and even dreamed about them, it would explain how, to the Continued on Page Forty -Nine I SPORTS CLOSE-UPS By IRA SEEBACHER Continued from Page Two superstitious, these dreams foretold the future. Obviously, it is a wonderful and tremendously colorfuly story that Ralph Lowe, Gallant Mans owner, dreamt about the Derby before it was run and even mentioned later that he had dreamt Willie Shoemaker mistook the exact situation of the finish line. This is but one of the many things that can go wrong in a race and it is possible that it presented itself to Mr. Lowes mind as a possibility. He worried about it. along with probably dozens of other possibilities, to the extent he dreamed about it. As we say, this may be a very pat explanation and not necessarily correct but, to us, it does sound better than insisting Mr. Lowe had a vision or was suddenly gifted with being able to peer into the future. On the other hand, there are case histories galore that simply cannot be explained so simply. There have been dreams of experiences, so unpredictable, so unlikely to be the product of worry, that have been realized in full detail, convictions are strangely shaken that there have been a few instances, at least, where God has seen fit to give a few of us an occasional and fleeting glimpse of things to come. All of us, surely, at one time or another have experienced the strange sensation of having been somewhere before, knowing that we have not, or living some particular episode a second time.. These are the things men study and group through and learn little about.
