Cicero. 111., May 9. — Clarence Meaux. leading rider at this track, scored his second triumph of the afternoon when he guided Happy Lad. an outsider, to victory in the featured Lord Boswell Purse here today. Never far from the pace. Happy Lad. owned by R. J. Weston, took command entering the stretch and was two lengths before Reclaim at the finish of the mile and one-sixteenth event. Third place was taken by Snoozie, who was racing coupled with Next Page. The latter finished fourth. Happy Lad. making his third start of the meeting, paid 9.40. His time was l:464i. Lead Changes Four Times Jims Whim, recently arrived from Jamaica where he led the crack five-year-old Midafternoon and other good ones into the stretch in his last start, was a short-priced favorite. He displayed some of his early speed today but stopped badly after going a half mile and finished a deep last, being beaten 20 lengths. He showed a tendency to bear out on the turns and jockey Baird was occupied in keeping him on the inside. Although Happy Lad broke in front. Jims Whim soon took command and led briefly until headed by Beau Carvel, an outsider. The latter showed the way down the backstretch but after leaving the far turn Reclaim took over on the outside. Once in front of Reclaim. Happy Lad gradually increased his margin over the latter, who finished fairly well in advance of Snoozie. The temperature this afternoon once again registered in the low eighties and a crowd of 11 394 turned out for the nine-race bill. The track was fast «. The sixth race brought about one of the closest finishes of the meeting when Mr. Bruce, Celestino R . and Total Traffic came to the end in that order and noses apart Celestino R . the short -priced favorite, took a lead of a couple of finches over Total Traffic about five yards from the wire, but Mr. Bruce came down the center of the track to nip him. Mr. Bruce, who is owned by Elge Rasberry. was ridden by Clarence Meaux. It was a six -furlong dash and Mr. Bruce was the second choice. Following the victory of Fat Jack, the favorite in the opening race, the public choices had a rough time of it. the four subsequent contests being taken by outsiders. Re Re Po won the second to com- plete a 16.60 Daily Double, with Witch-English being third. Fibre King took the third. Easy Traffic won the fourth, and Picafriend registered in the fifth. Picafriend, in winning her second race in two starts here, was ridden by Tony Skoronski, who was completing a double, he having been aboard Easy Traffic in the fourth. Jack Fieselman roda Fibre King, Larry Gilligan was on Re Re Po, and Robert Mundorf piloted Fat Jack.
