I | ! i j ! [ , ; Exercise Rider Wins 0,000 Damage Suit Wesley Brite Successful in Action Against Maine Chance NEW YORK. N. Y.. May 8.— Exercise rider Wesley E. Brite. injured in a training accident at Belmont Park in October, 1954, was awarded damages of 0,000 here Tuesday in his suit against Mrs. Elizabeth Graham, owner of Maine Chance Farm. The award for 0,000 was brought in by the jury after a week -long trial in U. S. District Court here. Brite was injured when Mrs. Grahams two-year-old colt. Star of Roses, ran away during training houis at Belmont October 17, 1954, and crashed head-on into Mrs. John Hertz four-year-old filly Speedv Wave, who wa beins exercised by Brite at the time. Both horses were killed instantly. Mrs. Hertz also has filed suit against Mrs. Graham. That action is still pending. In his suit. Brite contended that Mrs. Graham was negligent in permitting a horse of Star of Roses demeanor on the track when other horses were there. Star of Roses was galloping when he suddenly shied, unseated his rider and ran the wrong way around the track, crashing into Speedy Wave and throwing Brite to the ground. Brite has not ridden since the accident. There was testimony at the trial that he may never be able to ride again.
