How Speed Ratings Are Compiled Speed ratings appearing in DAILY RACING FORM past performances arc based on a comparison of each horses running time with the track record existing at the beginning of the meeting. The track record will receive a standard rating of 100 thus, a horse equaling the record will have a speed rating of 100. For each one-fifth second slower than the track record one point is deducted. Therefore, the rating for a horse running his race two and one-fifth seconds slower than the track record receives a speed rating of 89 1 k 100 minus 11. EXAMPLE Track record 1:10 Rating figure 100 Winners time l:10l Rating 99 " Time of second horse 1:10 97 Time of third horse 1:11 95 Time of fourth horse 1:115s "93 Time of fifth horse 1:113s 91 One point the equivalent of one-fifth second is deducted from the rating for each length the horse is beaten. Thus, a horse beaten four lengths in and six-furlong race run in 1:11 rating of 100 where the track record is 1:10 is timed in 1:115s, receiving a speed rating of 91.
