Taylors Queens Plate candidates Lyford Cay and Chopadette won their respective divisions of the mile and one-sixteenth Plate Trial at Woodbines opening this afternoon and moved into the favorites role for the 98th running of the Queens Plate on Saturday. They will run as an entryin the 5,000 added classic of Canadian racing. Both three-year-olds turned in impressive performances seemingly outclassing rival contenders. Lyford Cay, on the basis of time, may have turned in the better race. He covered the mile and one-sixteenth distance in 1:44, while never extended and winning by almost eight lengths. Chopadette was better than loyz lengths in the van position when completing the distance in 1:45. And like Lyford Cay he was never pressed for victory. I Woodbine opened with favorable weather conditions, sunny skies and a fast track. The attendance counted 7,183. Mrs. M. J. Boylens Lad Ator, hitherto a highly respected Plate hope, was the runner-up to Chopadette and as the race was run he was no match. He was in a contending position in the early running, but was simply outrun, dedicedly outrun. Dew i Valley Farms Count Teddy probably earned a starting place in the Plate by finishing third in his division of the Trial, but he was never a serious contender. Others in the field were strung out Indian style. Lyford Cays performance from a time standpoint may have been best. He raced the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:44, just a fifth off the track record. Going out the full Plate distance he was timed in 2:061and. His mile and a furlong split was 1:51! better than the record time for the Queens Plate at the distance. Chopadette completed his equally easy score in 1:45 and went out the full distance in 2:0515, with the mile and a furlong in 1:52.
