BETWEEN RACES By Oscar Otis CALIENTE, Tijuana, Mex., June 4.— We dont suppose that she is under consideration in Kentucky for "Broodmare of the Year" honors, but Baja Calif ornians think some sort of an award might be in order for one of the most unusual broodmares on the continent, Maiden Brave. This daughter of King Heather from a Sweep mare "did everything", for, in addition to winning her rhare of races, she became a trick performer, and could jump rope, play lame, tell her age, lie down, stand up and box, stand up with her fore feet on the outer rail and watch the races, and would answer questions, yes or no, by either a nod or the shake of her head. Her owner and trainer, Herb Rowe, also used her extensively in rodeos, winning cowboy races with her, calf roping contests, and Roman exhibitions. Once at a two-day rodeo in El Monte California she won a quarter mile cowboy race, a quarter mile cowgirl race, and a half-mile dash, and repeated the next afternoon, six races in all in two days. In addition, she appeared in several movies, including Stablemates Wallace Beery and Mickey Rooney, arid Sing You Sinners Bing Crosby. In any event, Maiden Brave is the dam of Kid Domino, Calientes most consistent three-year-old. The colt, by Lilokid, has the earmarks of a runner. AAA The versatility of Maiden Brave, her intelligence, and her willing heart both on and off the race track convinced Rowe, and most every one who ever saw her, of the fundamental truth of the statement, often made and as often challenged by the not so well informed "that a thoroughbred can dp anything any other breed of light horse can do, and do it twice as well." Her performances off the course as a trick horse are all the more impressive when it is learned that she often was in foal at the time, for she had her first foal at nine. The mare is now 17. Her first foal was a winner on the race track, and later teamed up with her mother in Roman exhibitions. A filly by the name of Nancy Carter. Her second foal, Balko Bunny, won five races in a row, and her last foal, a younger ► Maiden Brave Unusual Broodmare 4 Jenner .Pacing Caliente Trainers Learned Score as Rider for Burch Marty Plans Derby Future Book brother to Kid Domino, has been engaging the attention of Caliente dockers as a good prospect. His name is Blue Heather. AAA Calientes leading trainer, percentagewise, is Lawrence Jenner, who rocketed into the Mexican spotlight with the 10-year-old Valdina Gaylad. This horse, purchased last fall for the proverbial song, has started 10 times since, won four, was three times second, two times third, and fourth once. "Most people now have forgotten it, but I used to ride for Preston Burch when he had the old Nevada Stock Farm," says Jenner." Dick Handlen was the stable foreman, and Burley Parke was the stable agent. I rode for Burch through 1926 and 1927, and what I observed in those days has come back to me now, and has been a bulwark in my new job as a trainer. Burch taught me one thing above all else, and that was patience. Now take old Valdina Gaylad. Ive never worked him since I took him over. He is ponied about every other day, but never has a saddle or boy up in the morning. He is turned out to a paddock every afternoon, and I believe he is a sounder horse today at 10, than he was at five. Incidentally, Burch practiced a philosophy then, and I believe he still does, that means a lot to me. I never saw him lose his temper, and he took the bad luck with the same good grace he took the good luck. I hope that if Mr. Burch reads this, he will be happy to know that some of the sense he taught me as a 16-year-old youngster is helping me out now that I have 13 head of my own." AAA After reading in "Chuck" Connors column that the Kentucky Derby wasnt quite the same as in previous years, in fact, definitely missed a future book, Calientes general manager Walter C. Marty revealed here today that come next spring, in all probability he would offer future quotations on Derby starters in exactly the same manner as the future book is operated on the Santa Anita Handicap. Future books are quite legal in Mexico, and are exceed- singly popular with racing fans everywhere, for, while only a few fans, comparatively speaking, actually patronize future books, everyone looks to the "pay or play" price , , line as being the most accurate mirror in i | the world on big race probabilities. The 1 lines serve as an informative guide, and are accepted as authentic by the public because of the willingness of the future book operator to put up actual cash at the prices . • quoted. There is thus nothing theoretical about them. Pay or play wagering is al- most as old as the turf itself, although it , i did not become a recognized part of English racing until 1804 when it was given the official sanction of The Jockey Club. This sanction lasted until 1842, when The I Jockey Club divested itself of all ex-officio , j authority over pay or play betting, and this j authority was assumed by the committee I I I at Tattersalls. Incidentally, the pay or play , . of that day, or the future books, if you will, = j established one great service to the English | I speaking world, for, by mathematical probabilities the degree of the possibility of any i event could be accurately determined, and j thus what were in effect "future books" . j came into being as a means of expression, 1 and not necessarily involving actual wagering, into the common life of the nation, j For instance, the most accurate way to convey the probabilities of a presidential election is to state it in odds. j j * A * I j Horses and People: About 75 per cent of ■ the racing personnel here work through the week in aircraft factories. Exercise boys, jockeys, and valets put in the swing shift, 1 and the former two gallop horses of a morning through the week. They arent getting rich on one day a week racing, but they are making a good living, and, with their aircraft pay, are building up savings for the future. They are doing better than a lot of fellows who are employed full time on American race tracks, and spending it faster than they make it. ... J.- J. Dolan, who once trained for the Jello king, O. F. Woodward, is building up one of the strongest public stables on the grounds . . Calientes novel type wagering "1-2-3" is becoming so popular that new wickets are being installed . .There are so many apprentices here, about 30 in all, that we couldnt begin to list them. All the youngsters get a chance, and if they can make it, they graduate into the California metropolitan circuit.
