LATE DATE MAKES GOOD Vindicates Judgment of Backers by Winning Latonia Inaugural. Covington Meeting Begins Under Ideal Conditions- 12,000 Fans Journey to Track. . LATONIA, Ky., May 25. The Brentwood Stables Late Date, shipped here from Louisville, especially to run in" the Inaugural Handicap, proved herself much the best in the twentieth renewal of that fixture, which featured the opening day program at Latonia this afternoon. H. G. Shoemakers Open Hearth was second, Mrs. K. Ramseys Flint Shot third, and the Young Brothers Fiji fourth, in the field of ten which contested for the ,500 added purse. A crowd estimated at 12,000, which included the Lieut-Governor of Kentucky, A. B. Chandler, and state auditor J. S. Talbot, witnessed the opening of the thirty-seven day meeting under ideal conditions. The track was fast and the weather perfect. Late Date, ridden by Lester Balaski, was much the best. She had to be, for she suffered interference several times and still had enough to come on to win in a driving finish by half a length. Just as spirited was the fight for second money for at the end only a nose separated the second and third horses, Open Hearth and Flint Shot. Late Date was the victim of crowding just after the start, met interference on the clubhouse turn and more of it in the back stretch run, but once the six-year-old daughter of Hourless and Herd. Girl settled into her uninterrupted stride, she disposed of those in front of her with dispatch. She got up in the last sixteenth to score her victory which enriched her owner by ,215. Fiji began in front, but Flint Shot, crossing the others sharply, took command before reaching the first turn. The Ramsey colorbearer then set the pace, holding the lead down the back stretch, aroung the upper turn and well into the home stretch. He fought on doggedly after being caught first by Open Hearth, and then by Late Dat but third was the best he could do. He finished six lengths in front Of Fiji. Summit Hill was among the early leaders, but after going three-quarters only the first three really figured in the running. Late Date was the betting choice of the public arid paid .40 for . She was one of the favorites that won in the first six races. F. P. Letelliers Marie Jean, proved herself much the best in the opening dash of six furlongs, by overcoming early interference and winning off by herself. The Wise Counsellor mare was crowded back shortly after the start and jockey Glen Fowler had to pull her up sharply but she still was good enough Continued on thirty-fifth page. LATE DATE MAKES GOOD Continued from first page. to come on when she found racing room, Her margin at the finish was a length and a half. Sweet Memories was second, five lengths in front of Wanoah. Sweet Memories got to the front in the stretch arid looked a winner until Marie Jean drove down on the outside and left little doubt as to her superiority. The winner was the betting choice at 11 to 10. The well backed Charlie Jr. accounted for the third race which engaged eleven over a mile and seventy yards with Miss Vince, grouped in the field, second and Joda, third. Charlie Jr. followed American Belle for a half mile and then took the lead in the back stretch. Under Leo Canfield, the Wag-wood colt maintained a commanding lead around the far turn and well into the stretch bt from the eighth post to the. judges he had to be put to a sharp drive tb stand off the bold challenge of Miss Vince, which did most of bier early running far back. Charlie Jr. won by a half length. . W. F. Kriebelkamps Maintenance was made a strong favorite "to win the fourth but the best he could do was to finish third behind G. G. Weddings Judge Kavariagh, a rank outsider, and Runamuck. Judge Kava-nagh, two-year-old son of Ormont and Doris, was hustled to the front early, and ridden, by H. Louman, made every post a winning one. He rushed past the judges more than, two lengths to the good, while three lengths separated Runamuck and Maintenance. The second best race on the card developed the tighest fit of the afternoon for first money when Otherwise, owned by W. E. Smith, drove down a winner over Semester, Jake Bliedeh arid five others. The race, fifh on th program, was over six furlongs. Otherwise, which was jockey Fowlers second mount of the day, vas sent to the front at the outset -nd enjoyed a commanding lead as the field turned into the stretch; He still was two lengths to the good art eighth out, but he 1 1 yet to reckon with. Semester, which closed with a fine btst of speed and all but caught the leader. Otherwise won by a head, while Semesters margin over Jake Blieden was three lengths.
