DARK: HOPE SURPRISES Outstays Lynx Eye in Thrilling Finish at Rockingham Park. Outsider Stuns Largest Crowd of Salem Meeting by Winning the New Hampshire Handicap. SALEM, N. H., May 25. Dark Hope, raw-boned six-year-old, carrying the colors of J. W. Y. Martin and saddled by Man o Wars developer, Lou Feustel, amazed a majority of a gathering of some 20,000 race fans here this afternoon as he raced to the finish of the New Hampshire Handicap a neck in advance of the fast finishing Lynx Eye in one of the most stirring contests witnessed at this track. Percy N. Pikes Teralice was third, two lengths hack of the Robertson performer and just in advance of A. C. Vanderbilts favored Dogmata. After failing to show anything remotely resembling speed in much the same company in the Granite-State Handicap here last week, comparatively few in the large assemblage cared to risk their wagers on the Martin racer, with the result he paid 8.20 in the tote. A foul was claimed by jockey J. Longden, on Teralice, who stated that Knapp, on Dogmata, impeded him but this was dismissed. A. G. Vanderbilt, who flew up from Long Island to witness the race with his trainer, J. H. Stotler, declared to win with Dogmata, which was racing in blinkers for the first time here today. The entry was backed into favoritism but was no match for their rivals at the weights. The bright sunshine and warmest weather of the meeting to date brought the biggest crowd of the local season to the New Hampshire- Breeders Association course and it was freely predicted that a new high in the handle for the meeting would be recorded. Dogmata and Identify dominated the race In the New Hampshire Handicap in the early stages. They began fast from inside positions and Fallon placed Identify about a half length off Dogmata, which was on the rail in the run to the first turn, where Teralice was third and Dark Hope was back of him under restraint. The four moved around the first turn and through the back stretch in just this fashion. On the turn Kacala asked Dark Hope to run and he went right to the pacemakers, putting Dogmata away as Teralice dropped back momentarily. Fallon was watching every move of his rivals as he raced along just off Dogmata and he charged past his beaten stablemate with Identify. They entered the stretch with Dark Hope drawing away from Identify and Lynx Eye making up ground fast on the outside as Teralice came again under punishment. In the final eighth it was a question of whether Lynx Eye and Wagner could down Dark Hope, but they missed by a hairs breadth. Teralice was third before the tiring Identify. Identify, according to the present plans of his young owner, will be shipped to Belmont to compete in the Suburban. Zowie scored her fifth success of the year as she raced to a convincing length and a half victory at the direct expense of Jamboree in the five furlongs opening race. Jamboree in turn was a length in advance of Spank at the end. Zowie always; showed the most speed of the group, with Shyno racing in second position and Jamboree third through the back stretch and well into the front path. Shyno tired as Robertson, without aid of the whip, moved on Jamboree and went into second place. Near the end Spank charged down on the outside of Shyno to beat that Jock gelding for third in the last nod. The longest priced winner to date beat a poor band of a dozen platers over three-quarters in the second when C. W. Phe-lans Palatine scored by a length over Wittekind. Nearly two lengths back, Judge Peak was third before the tiring Mixed Party. The winner paid a mutuel of 21.90 and ran the distance in 1:14. It was his first success this year. Mixed Party had the most early speed, racing away from the gate into a clear lead of a length from her outside position. Bipartisan and Profitable were close up in the early stages but tired, and Wittekind went to Mixed Party on the turn. Wagner was nursing the pacemaker along with a slight lead at the eighth post, but it was of no use, for Wittekind ran past her and then Palatine darted up on the outside to win going away. Judge Peak slipped through next to the rail in the last strides to snatch third. Mynah, racing for the Apache Stable, scored her first victory of the local season as she ran past St. Omer to capture the winners share of the fourth purse, bringing together a field of ten distance runners of the plater variety. The race marked a double for F. A. Smith. A trifle over a length separated the first two at the finish, with Dancing Mack lapped on St. Omer for third and Doorkeeper fourth as the favored Zembla failed to get into the picture. Swinging for home Mynah, which had been passed by Dancing Mack on the back stretch, moved past that horse on the outside and caught the leader near the eighth post. After a short tussle she came away to win pricking her ears. Balios, one-time stake horse, scored his second straight victory when he got up in a blanket finish in the sixth race to beat Taunton by a neck, with the latter in turn just a nose before Cutie Face, with Slipper King fourth. The favored Hug Again, was beaten off in the last furlong. The winner raced a mile in 1:39, and paid a mutuel of 5.80. Hokuao set the pace the first three-quarters with Hug Again and Speedmore right after him. Turning for home, Speedmore took a short lead over Hug Again as Hokuao quit, but about the eighth post Cutie Face caught him and Taunton and Balios, on the outside, shuffled him out of the placed positions as they hooked up in a head and head battle to the end with Balios a neck before the fast finishing Taunton. ; Grainger, ridden by the veteran Johnny , Maiben, and sporting the. Nimkoff silks, , scored over five other distance running platers in the seventh offering, running the i route in 1:53. Brass Monkey, was right on his heels at the. end and just beat Midship- man for second place. The winner followed closely the early pace of Annarita, while j under restraint. Near the far turn, Anna- -rita was done and Grainger went into the lead. , ij
