JULIA R. raced to the front soon after the start to open up a good lead and, saving ground where possible, raced well to the end to hold LITTLE HANK. The latter appeared sore going to the post and dropped back after breaking well, but came fast in the last quarter and was gaining on the winner at the finish. CONSORT JR. showed an improved effort. BLIND SAGE was close enough in the early running and, responding gamely to hard urging in the stretch, wore down the latter to win in a drive. STAR BESS began more slowly than usual and was forced to trail RUTH G. to the stretch before getting to the front, then opened up a good lead, but was unable to withstand the winners challenge. COL. GOODNIGHT was well up from the start and raced gamely to the finish. LITTLE MISTAKE showed improvement, but tired near the finish. RUTH G. tired. MOVE UP broke poorly. MANTECA got to the front soon after the start and, opening up a long lead around the stretch turn, had enough left at the finish to hold MILES STANDISH. The latter came strongly through the stretch and was gaining on the winner. GREAT MEADOWS lacked early speed, but moved up fast after leaving the back stretch and might have been danccious had his rider been able to keep him going in the last sixteenth.
