! j Here and There j on the Turf i Classic Will Settle Leadership Mr. Bones, Hollyrood Stepping i Up i Granvilles Task Appears Tough Whitney Colt Still Learning j mma Once again the Arlington Classic is to be called upon to determine three-year-old leadership, but hardly the championship because it would be most unfair to Bold Venture. Morton L. Schwartzs colt did everything asked of him this year and while some other horse may finish out the season in a blaze of glory, the son of St Germans and Possible had quite a claim to titular honors. At the present time three colts remain with an excellent opportunity of taking what is left of the glory. They are Granville, Mr. Bones and Hollyrood, with William Woodwards representative in command because of his triumphs over the latter two in the Belmont Stakes, although his margin over John Hay Whitneys long strider was slight. Both Mr. Bones and Hollyrood have been accomplishing things of late, however, while Granville has been inactive and they deserve another chance at the son of Gallant Fox and the Classic furnishes the opportunity. Mr. Bones gave a most convincing performance Saturday in winning the Dwycr Stakes at one mile and a furlong, taking up 119 pounds and running the distance in 1:49 over a course that was not quite at its best. The son of Royal Minstrel and Rinkey was never extended in turning back an early bid by Jean Bart and holding the others safe through the stretch where he was inclined to loaf and had to be shaken up a time or two by Johnny Gilbert. Mr. Bones, like Bold Venture, required considerable time in learning how to race. The latter really didnt settle down in his running until this season while the Whitney colt still must be broken of the habit of permitting his attention to wander to other matters such as crowds or a shadow while running in a race. In the Belmont Stakes he had horses alongside of him all the way so his mind was kept on his business, but not so in the Dwyer when he was out by himself. In the Classic, Mr. Bones will get a five pound concession of weight from Granville and with this advantage he will make matters very interesting for the Belmont Stakes winner, which held Bold Venture to a head decision in the Preakness. The Arlington course also should suit him because of its wide turns and short stretches as he has the speed to get most any position he wishes while the others will have to take what is left. A big, rangy colt, the son of Royal Minstrel still may be climbing towards the peak of his ability and if that is the case Granville and Hollyrood will have to be very good indeed to turn back his bid in the Classic. He certainly is proving himself the best colt Royal Minstrel has sired, although Sincing Wood has been very successful and First Minstrel was denied his chance because of infirmities. Derby, now has beaten the latter twice in decisive fashion in winning the Detroit and Chicago Derbys. In capturing the latter two events in successive Saturdays, Holly-rood cleaned up the mid-western three-year-old division in thorough fashion. His margins in both events were not very large but Hal Price Headleys colt got the verdict, which is what counts. The question with the son of High Cloud and Mandy Hamilton is whether he has improved since he ran third in the Belmont Stakes in which he was beaten eight lengths. If he has, he will give Granville and Mr. Bones a fight. Otherwise they figure to hold him safe. Airflame, which gave New England fans splendid demonstration of his speed, probably will make his next appearance at Empire City. Bill Farnsworth, Mrs. Marian Cassidys capable three-year-old, will compete in the Commonwealth Handicap at Suffolk Downs tomorrow, getting in that six furlongs event nicely under 108 pounds. Ira Hanford loses his apprentice allowance July 25, and he may shift to a mutuel track at the close of Aqueduct to increase his opportunities during the late days of his apprenticeship. The X-ray pictures failed to show a fracture in Brevitys ankle but the injured member has been kept in a cast. However, he has been able to walk daily. The next objective of the Chance Shot or Sickle colt will be the Widener Challenge Cup which with 0,000 added will be well worth winning. Discovery even may be considered a possibility for Miamis counter attraction to the Santa Anita Handicap. j
