LOCAL OWNERS HORSE BEST Mrs. H. Hogarths Roche DOr Best in Feature Event at Popular Dufferin Park. TORONTO, Ont, June 22. Under a well judged ride by E. Burns, Roche DOr, racing in the silks of Mrs. G. Hogarth, local owner, was the winner of the best offering at Dufferin Park for the second day of the Metropolitan Racing Association meeting when the improved eight-year-old son of Rock-1 ville and Pewter Jug decisively defeated seven other home-bred plater distance performers in the fifth race, in which the various entrants competed over a mile and one-sixteenth. Ruling second choice in the wagering, the winner came from behind to score by five lengths over W. Watermans consistent four-year-old filly, Gay Sympathy, while Asperge, one of the lightly regarded members in the field of eight, took third from the five others, which included the disappointing favorite, Madfast. For the beginning of the final six days of racing at the popular mid-city track, a large crowd watched the sport and several thrilling finishes kept enthusiasm at a high pitch throughout the day. Over 3,000 fans took advantage of the free gate after the fifth race. In the score of Roche DOr, Burns used good judgment when he was content to rate his mount in third place back of Asperge and Madfast as the two went out on even terms to set the pace. Waiting until reaching the back stretch for the final turn of the half-mile track, Roche DOr challenged the pair in front when he drove abreast on the last turn, then going past, swiftly increased his lead until he prevailed at the will of his pilot at the end. Gay Sympathy, in sixth place for most of the journey, showed a belated rush to drop into the runner-up position, while Asperge barely lasted to beat Big Fish, which in turn led the wilting Madfast.
