WINNERS AT SHORT PRICES Successful Horses in Mondays Early Races Favorites With Large Crowd at Ak-Sar-Ben. OMAHA, Neb., June 22 Short-priced horses got the money in the early races on the opening day of the second to the last week of the Omaha meeting. After Julia R. had won the opening event, with Little Hank, the favorite, second, Blind Sage, a California two-year-old, came along to win the second event from Star Bess, another short-priced animal, and Manteca, the favorite, annexed the third event. Julia R. led most of the way in the first. She opened up a good lead soon after the start and, though Little Hank made a gallant run in the stretch, he could not get up. Little Hank pulled up sore. The order was reversed in the second race when Blind Sage came from the rear to catch Star Bess, the pacemaker, nearing the wire. Manteca led all the way in the third race to beat Miles Standish and Great Meadows. With jockeys Simmons, Gray and Grill, a trio of older riders, performing well, apprentices Chojnacki and Shultz are not holding the limelight as much as they did in the early part of the meeting. Despite their disadvantage of being without the five-pound allowance, the three veterans are expected to give the apprentices a battle for honors and the gold watch during the latter part of the meeting. , The Ak-Sar-Ben racing strip, which was so fast Saturday when three track records were established, was cut up Sunday, but was again in good condition for Mondays racing. A large first week-day crowd saw the sport.
