Twenty Years of Future Books on KENTUCKY DERBY and the Results 1919 J. W. McClellands Eternal opened in the 1919 future books on the Kentucky Derby as the favorite, but he was only one point lower than mighty little Billy Kelly. Eternal was 4 to 1, Billy Kelly, 5 to 1. Dunboyne was also popular and was quoted at 8. Billy Kelly was about as small a horse as War Admiral and, like the Riddle star, he had tremendous speed. Sir Barton, a maiden in the J. K. L. Ross string-, whose colors Billy Kelly also carried, was 30 to 1 and, as late as May 3 could still be backed at 20 to 1. On that date Billy Kelly had supplanted Eternal as favorite, being backed down to 2 1-2 to 1, while the McClelland colt remained 3 to 1. Be Frank attracted considerable support as the date of the race approached and went down to 10, but Vindex, because of brilliant training moves, was slashed from 30 to 6 to 1 and was third choice to Billy Kelly and Eternal. "Vindex, however, made a poor showing and trailed home every other starter in the race. Sir Barton won his maiden victory in the Derby, being the second non-winner to achieve premier honors in the great Louisville race. Little Billy Kelly, one of the shining lights of American turf history but, unfortunately, from a breeding standpoint, a gelding, finished second to his stablemate, with Under Fire third. Dunboyne did not get to the post like so many other prospective Derby stars held at short odds in the futures. Fans may be puzzled to see the name of St. Bernard in the 1919 Derby field, but the name was claimed for a recent good horse because the St. Bernard of 1919, a gelding by Ivan the Terrible Beatrice K., passed from the turf picture a sufficient number of years ago to permit the Shaffers of Chicago to claim the name for their Bull Dog colt, which was a six-year-old. Eternal and Sailor, the McClelland entry, were mutuel favorites over the Ross pair, with Regalo third choice on Derby Day.
