MAIN MAN VICTORIOUS IN PHOENIX HANDICAP Carries Silks of J. B. Respess to Success Under 120 Pounds Crowd of 7,500 Present for Opening of Kentucky Racing Season at Keeneland Park Gov. Chandler Present LEXINGTON, Ky., April 14. In the smartest opening in the young history of the Keeneland Association, approximately 7,500 persons saw Main Man, sporting the silks of Jerome B. Respess, Erlander, Ky., turfman, drive to a well-deserved triumph in the Phoenix Handicap. The four-year-old son of Hildur and Rose Mist, burdened with 120 pounds while making his first start of the season, ran the six furlongs in 1:12, to defeat Calumet Farms Talked About by slightly more than a length. Another two lengths away Louise J. Hickmans Dusty Dawn was third, while Preeminent, the top weight under 132 pounds and second choice to the winner, was fourth, in the field of seven capable sprinters. As ideal sririrur weather prevailed and Keeneland was in its best attire, leaders in the thoroughbred, industrial, professional and social life of central Kentucky jammed the grandstand and clubhouse to witness the inaugural program of the eleven-day meeting. Many notables, headed by Gov. Albert B. Chandler, were in the throng. DEMONSTRATES SUPERIORITY. Main Man was clearly best of the field and as he reached the finish with victory well in his grasp he was greeted by wild applause from the patrons as the Hildur colt had to display a noticeable amount of courage to master his rivals and add ,700 to his earnings. Unable to keep up in the run down the back stretch after breaking well, Dusty Dawn flashing to the front with Torchy close by, Main Man was eased back by jockey W. F. Ward approaching the turn. After getting in the clear, he was guided off the rail and began moving up between horses as he responded well to urging. Dusty Dawn continued to set the pace on the inside rounding the turn but Main Man advanced so readily that he was in second place reaching the stretch entrance. Upon being shaken up, he went to Dusty Dawn and raced that veteran into defeat in the ensuing furlong, drawing away into a clear lead, he held on under stout pressure to keep Talked About at his heels after the Calumet colt had disposed of the tiring Dusty Dawn. Talked About had been well up from the start on the outside of the leaders. Preeminent could not threaten under his high impost and went wide on the turn. BOURBON KING WINS. Bourbon King, second in the Flamingo Stakes to Lawrin, and one of Hal Price Headleys trio of Kentucky Derby candidates, gave the president of the Keeneland Association his first victory of the meeting in defeating three other members of the Continued on sixteenth page. 1 MAIN MAN VICTORIOUS IN PHOENIX HANDICAP Continued from first page. division in the Crestwood Purse, the secondary attraction. Installed an odds-on favorite and ridden by Irving Anderson, the son of Whichone and Ancient Queen responded to a strong hand ride through the stretch to gain the decision at the end of the mile and a sixteenth by slightly more than a length over the Valdina Farms Lassator. Greentree Stables Birthday followed at Lassators heels as Silver Sarah, second to Tiger in the 1 Arkansas Derby, was fourth and last. The time was 1:46. Oddesa Beulah set a new record for the Headley course, which is forty feet short of four furlongs in making the Allendale Purse one of the supporting features, her sixth victory in as many starts. The daughter of Wise Counsellor, from the Detroit-owned Oddesa Farms stable, ran the distance in :46 to defeat the Greentree Stables Cheriy Jam by two lengths, as Dixianas Likly Lad, which forced Galley Slave to her worlds record for three furlongs, was slightly more than another length away. Oddesa Beulah was an even money favorite among the six likely juveniles going postward. Breaking second from her outside post position, Oddesa Beulah went right about her business under hustling tactics from M. Calvert to run down Likly Lad in the opening furlong. RANGE DUST GRADUATES. Valdina Farms Range Dust, beaten off in his five starts at Santa Anita, had too much speed for the eleven other two-year- old maiden colts and geldings, meeting over the Headley course in the opening event, and led all the way in the time of :47and to defeat L. C. Youngs Ed by two and a half lengths. Hal Price Headleys Supreme Speed and Su-. perstition, separated by a head, were third" and fourth, well back of Ed. A dozen maiden three-year-olds came out for the third race, at six furlongs, with Hal Price Headleys Copy Cat, the brother to Larranaga and a Kentucky Derby eligible, being made the choice, but the best he could do was to finish second to Mrs. W. E. Smiths Lady Ariel, which was coupled with Alan Chicle in the field. A half length separated them at the end, as P. T. Chinns Mark Hellinger was four lengths farther back. Blue Ice was fourth. The field was neglected in the wagering, paying 5111.40 straight.
