JAMAICA OPENS SATURDAY Paumonok Handicap and Youthful Stakes Feature of Fine Inaugural Program. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 14 Saturday the gates of the Jamaica race course will open for the inauguration of the 1938 thoroughbred racing season under the jurisdiction of the State Racing Commission and Jockey Club. President Edward H. Kilroe, the executive director of the Metropolitan Jockey Club which conducts racing at Jamaica, is enthusiastic over prospects for the sport. Exceptionally favorable weather has helped considerably to make the seasons sport propitious by permitting trainers to exercise their steeds and tune them up. Racing secretary and handicapper John B. Campbell has arranged a seven-race program for the opening. It will include two stakes the Paumonok Handicap and Youthful. The former is for three-year-olds and upward and has ,500 added. It closed with twenty nominations, among which are Clodion, Knight Gallant, Rudie, Snark, He Did, Wise Prince, Rollin Home, Great Union, Infantry, Merry Lassie, Opera Hat. The youthful is for two-year-olds and has ,500 added. It closed with fifty-eight nominations, among which are many aspirants for the racing limelight.
