HOLLYWOOD PARK OFFICIALS Sdmond G. Soule to Preside in Stand at New Coast Track. Efficient Governing Body of Men Engaged for Sport at Inglewood — Horse Board Approves List. INGLEWOOD, Calif., May 19.— Without a question of a doubt some of the most noted Curfmen to be found anywhere in the United States will officiate in various capacities for the initial thirty-three day summer meeting of the Hollywood Turf Club. When the bugle sounds for the first race on Friday, June 10, racegoers will be pleased to see the following efficient stewards, judges and other officials on hand to supervise the events on the racing strip: Presiding Steward — Edmond G. Soule. Associate Steward — Charles A. Hartwell. Steward representing the California Horse Racing Board — J. Kingsley Macomber. Steward at the start — James F. Gallagher. Placing judges — C. A. Hartwell, F. L. Mc-Kenney, M. H. Morrison. Clerk of the scales — Barry Whitehead. Paddock and patrol judges — Joseph E. Walter, Fred Cantrell. Starter — Edward Thomas. Timer— R. F. Brown. Track superintendent — Frank M. Kelley. Track veterinarian representing California Horse Racing Board — Dr. H. C. McKim. M. H. Morrison, one of the three placing j judges, is also racing secretary. Walter is | Morrisons assistant in the secretarys office. The list of officials was approved by the California Horse Racing Board. COLORFUL OFFICIAL. Perhaps the most colorful of the racing officials is the debonair Soule. He knows the game inside out, so to speak. He raced Stables of horses on California, New York and Maryland tracks for many years, was a topnotch breeder, and developed two famous jockeys in their day — Johnny Maiben and | Benny Marinelli. Horsemen and enthusiasts | agree Soule was one of a few of the greatest handicappers in turf history. He bought ! Marinellis contract for 0,000 in California j and had him ride some of his horses in New j York. His favorite rider was Maiben, whom j he sold for 5,000 to Tom Healey for Walter | J. Salmon. He iaceu horses as far back as 1902 in j California. In the East he was represented by such topnotch "horoughbreds as Paddy J Whack, Edwina. Regal Lodge, Sleiveconard, ! the sire of many California Conards, Polythia j and Pullox. At Emeryville his stable included such famous performers as College Widow, Fullctta, Grace G. and Palamon. His Carmelina won the California Oaks in 1907. Soule officiated as a steward for two meetings at Santa Anita. HARVARD GRADUATE. Hartwell is a Harvard graduate and a breeder over a stretch of twenty years. He also raced a stable of horses. His father wrote the territorial laws for Hawaii. Gallagher has presided as a steward at Tanforan. He was also a paddock and patrol judge at Santa Anita. McKenney has officiated as presiding steward at Tanforan. Thomas is a well-known starter. At this writing he is starting the fields at Tanforan. He has officiated in a like capacity at various tracks the whole and breadth of the land. The Inglewood racing strip is the twenty-ninth Kelley has built. Originally he was Pittsburgh Phils clocker. ♦
