FORCEFUL WITCH GRADUATES Second Favorite of Afternoon to Win at River Downs Course. Track Conditions Remain Heavy for Running of Program — Audrey L. Scores Big Surprise in Fifth Race. CINCINNATI, Ohio, May 19.— Forceful Witch, a much-raced Omaha-bred son of Witchmount and Dominate, which flaunts the banner of Mrs. W. T. Freeman left the maiden juvenile ranks in the fourth event, which was one of the best races of a mediocre program offered over a heavy and holding track at River Downs this afternoon. Nonconnah was second at the end of five furlongs, with Catalonia third, some five lengths back of Nonconnah, which was beaten by two lengths for the major award. Heavy showers early this morning prevented any chance of the track being in a better condition than that of yesterday, but as those performers partial to such a track were entered over night there were few withdrawals. POPULAR WINNER. Forceful Witch was the second popular winner of the afternoon selected by a good-sized crowd and although he was well out of it during the opening three-eights, R. L. Vedder drove him forward during the running for home to overhaul Nonconnah and rapidly draw away from him. Another son of Mere Play was successful and the biggest surprise came with the fifth race when Audrey L. was an easy winner for the three-quarters fifth race. Col. Pete was second and Madcap Yankee third. Robert McCarty had the winner in the van I at the start and she made every post a winning one with Col. Pete chasing her throughout and Madcap Yankee reaching third place ! rounding the far bend. Dan Lehan saddled his first winner of the . meeting when Mere Blaze carried the colors I of A. C. Mack to an easy victory in the I three-quarters first race. Tarpon, .which enjoyed favoritism over Mere Blaze, was i second and Swale third. Frank Grill had the | winner in front after the first few strides I and he made every post a winning one. VAN DUSEN SADDLES ANOTHER. Clyde Van Dusen saddled his fourth winner for Charles T. Fishers Dixiana stable | when High Fire, a maiden son of High Time and Miss Fire, proved the games in a stretch duel which found him, Gay Bill and Obstinate Boy so closely aligned at the end of the six furlongs second race that the picture had to separate them. Oddesa Lad was the first winning favorite of the afternoon when she soundly trounced six other maiden three-year-olds in the three-quarters third race. Sympathizer was second and Sweeping Vine third. Ridden by Donald Grant and reserved when Young Ebony sprinted into a long lead during the opening quarter, Oddesa Lad, son of Busy American — Vendall, took command nearing the final three furlongs and, rapidly establishing a big lead, as he raced to the finish five lengths before Sympathizer.
