DOROTHY ROCK WINS FEATURE Mrs. Emil Denemarks Filly Scores Triumph in Elks Purse. Large Gathering Present at Suffolk Downs for B. P. O. E. Day — Pokeaway Scores in Thrilling Finish. BOSTON, Mass., May 19.— Mrs. Emil Dene-marks Dorothy Rock, the favorite, drove home by a length in the mile Elks Purse, which featured a day of racing honoring the B. P. O. E. at Suffolk Downs this afternoon. The Pharamond II. filly was clear of John Hay Whitneys Upstream, extreme outsider in the field of five, as they went under the wire Wise Counsel finished third Alter Ego and Warlaine were the only other starters. They ran as named. Warlaine, breaking from outside the stalls, took the lead at the first turn, followed by Dorothy Rock, and they went in that order to the middle of the back stretch, where Warlaine began to show signs of tiring and Dorothy Rock moved to the lead. At the far turn Upstream took dead aim on the filly. The pair came into the stretch close together, with Dorothy Rock showing the way by half a length and Upstream full of run. Dorothy Rock cut off Upstream as they straightened away, drew off to a length lead and held it to the end. Upstream had no opposition for the place, taking that award by three lengths. The day was clear and warm and a crowd of some 13,500, bolstered by many Elks members was on hand for the sport. In one of the most thrilling finishes of the meeting, Pokeaway, under a rousing ride from C. Stevenson, was up in the last stride to take the six furlongs of the fourth race. Superwick, stoutly supported choice, seemed to have the race won a few yards from the finish and only lost it when the more experienced Stevenson outrode Bierman. High Voltage came from a long way back to be third. A poor start marred the event. Marson was away poorly as to have little chance. The Misstep gelding closed a lot of ground but was unable to reach a prominent position.
