r BRADLEY-WHITNEYINFLUENCEON DERBY j ~» . E. R. Bradleys green and white colors will be missing Saturday in Louisvilles -Li big Derby, but those old time fans who came to believe that a Kentucky Derby without a Bradley or Whitney horse was no Derby at a all, probably were gratified when John Hay Whitney partially "saved" the Yi race . by declaring Heather Broom would start. The green and white, Eton blue and brown, pink and black or pink, black and white must necessarily flash in the sun as the Derby field p parades to the post to give the race that certain fillip that makes it an 0 official renewal to the old timer. Recent converts to racing may not understand why the graybeards n need .. a Whitney or Bradley representative in the Derby to excite them, but 1] if they will examine the appended table closely they may understand. 1 The brief revue goes back only twenty years, but it was a score of years j, in which much Derby history was written. The Whitney clan and Bradley h helped 1] to write that account. Between the sporting family of the East 3 and the veteran turfman of the Middlewest, they started forty-six horses v between, them, spit evenly, or twenty-six lor Bradley and twenty-six t between Harry Payne, Mrs. Payne, John Hay and Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. More to the point, probably, they managed to win six of them 3 and, except for recent years, they have always furnished a favorite or a J horse that figured to have a chance. The Whitneys in particular have furnished more Kentucky Derby favorites than anybody else in the history of the race. The following table g shows the mutuel price against all the horses: WHITNEY FAMILY —1919— . 1 Horse. Owner. Finish. Odds. 1 Vindex .....H.P. 12th 8.30 —1920— I Upset H. P. 2nd $ 5.30 J Damask .H.
