1 WHEELING DOWNS NOTES | $ ■ e Jerry Bronnenberg, who has always raced with considerable success at Wheeling, will return to the Wheeling Downs oval for the spring meeting, opening May 27, he informed Edward J. Brennan, managing director, this week. Bronnenberg topped his Wheeling record when in 1938 his campaigners topped the money-winning list during the two sessions of the sport. Bronnenberg, whose horses race in his wifes name, earned ,935 and shared honors with Charlie Kranz as the leading trainer with a dozen winners. The stable colony is growing rapidly and now totals sixteen, including a lead pony with the official "opening day" for stable space still a week away. Mike Alvarez of Weirton arrived with Michael Whalen; E. Carter shipped from Fort Erie with Fly Weight, which was seen here last year, and "Whitey" Turners Pineaway has checked in here. R. J. Parrish, Len Rogerson and A. E. Watts are beginning to loosen up their charges. Every morning one or two of the gallopers are hustled around the outside of the oval, but none are ready to be set down for a stiff workout along the rail. J. Gilbert Haus, who will serve as placing judge and clerk of scales during the coming meeting, was a visitor from Baltimore during the past few days. He has returned to be on hand for the opening of the Pimlico season. The stable of Mrs. O. M. Kauffman, prominent Pittsburgh sportswoman, will arrive here within a few days from her Pennsylvania farm near the Smoky City. The Kauffman silks were seen here at both the fall and spring meetings last season.
