DOCTOR FORCED TO OPERATE! I UNDER THREAT OF DEATH j *■ . - .4 With a snarling gunman menacing his life, a physician, Wednesday, was forced to perform a major operation with a razor blade , on a wounded bandit, who, with a companion, [ had just murdered an undertaker and i critically wounded two policemen. Half an [ hour earlier the gunman was shot through t the abdomen in a pistol battle in an attempted . holdup at the Eastwood Inn, a north t side taxern. In the gun fight Alex Ferguson, 55, who runs a mortuary, was shot and killed. Policeman Edwin Mclntyre, 42, was shot in I the head and seriously wounded. His companion, . Phil Kelly, also a member of. the , police force, was wounded four times. For . twenty-five minutes during which he was . taunted with threats of death if the patient died, Dr. Hirschfeld operated in the dim [ bedroom light to which he had been lured. At the end of that time he removed a bullet which had lodged near the gunmans spine. During the operation Dr. Hirschfeld said [ the wounded man, evidently under the influence . of drugs, did not flinch. As the doctor let the patient turn over after taking the , bullet from his back, the man said, "Gimme [ that slug. Im going to send it back to the ; one who fired it— with interest." That was not the end of the physicians ordeal. The red-haired bandit said: "Were going to move. You stay with the patient, and youd better keep him alive." 4 ■
