Stortz at Fairmount Parks Long Meeting. The Illinois Racing Commission at its last meeting adopted a new rule calculated to further safeguard the public from crooks who still believe they can beat the saliva test by new drugs. The new test, a urinalyses, will be given in addition to the saliva test. Analyses of the urine of horses selected by the steward representing the commission at various meetings, was adopted for the simple reason that in the past shortage of saliva to make more exhaustive tests developed when half of the specimen taken was handed over to the owners, trainers or their representatives. In transit through the rigid laboratory test of the saliva, suspicious color or crystals would occur, but because minute portions of the saliva were necessary to pass all the chemical baths, not enough remained to carry out further experiments. The urinalyses, after exhaustive tests in laboratories all over the country was adopted for that reason — certainty of quantity. In addition, specific drugs which heretofore did not reveal themselves in saliva tests, give positive reactions in the urine. Julius Bauer, veteran owner and trainer, . is the first appointee of the commission to act as their representative in the urinalyses tests at Fairmount Park. He will assist Dr. J. C. Stortz, of Edwardsville, commission veterinarian at Collinsville. Catheterization of horses will not be permitted. This rule was adopted to prevent possible claims for damages should a horse ; fall sick from natural causes after being catheterized. Owners and trainers might ■ claim the use of the catheter caused the illness. RULE ADOPTED. Following is the new rule adopted: "Rule 240-D. In addition to the saliva test provided for in these Rules, a urine specimen ■ shall be taken and tested from horses which [ shall be selected by the Steward representing ; the Illinois Racing Commission, for urinalysis. Such urine tests are to be under _ the supervision of the Illinois Racing Commission, " and the expenses thereof to be paid by the several Racing Associations. The urine specimen shall be collected by an Assistant ; to the Veterinarian representing the . Illinois Racing Commission as soon as possible after the running of the race. Said [ Assistant shall be appointed by the Illinois . Racing Commission and be paid by the Racing Association. "The practice and procedure in taking the i sample of iurine in each instance shall be followed in the identical manner as is provided for in the taking of the saliva specimens, including ensealing of the glass jar and care and custody thereof. Provided, however, that the trainer or owner may in each instance designate in writing a groom or other person licensed by the Illinois Racing Com-1 mission to be in constant attendance with his horse until the sample has been procured, bottled and sealed, and designate in writing that such groom or other licensed person so selected by him shall place his original sig-nature on the seal of the said jar containing the specimen. Blank forms for such au-, thorization by owner or trainer may be procured from the Veterinarian representing the Illinois Racinrr Commission. The said owner or trainer shall have like privilege of attending the examination and testing of the urine specimen as is provided herein with reference to the saliva specimens."
