1 CHURCHILL DOWNS NOTES I — — g, John H. Curry, former Tammany chieftain, and a party of friends arrived from New York Tuesday. Jockey Carroll Bierman leaves Friday for Pimlico, where he will ride King Ranchs Ciencia in the Pimlico Oaks. Bierman was astride the filly when she won the Santa Anita Derby. Due to the serious illness of his sister, jockey C. Kurtsinger was permitted to cancel his engagements Wednesday. Jockey Jimmy Stout arrived from New York and was aboard Challenge in his workout Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson F. Woodward, elated over the fine showing of Viscounty in the Derby Trial, were early morning visitors at their private stable here Wednesday. They came from Texas several days ago. H. "Tex" Callahan had his first -mount the meeting Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Nash and Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Nash of Chicago arrived here Wednesday and they will be joined Thursday by Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Nash. R. J. and P. Nash race horses under the name of the Shandon Farm stable, a division of which here at the Downs. Don Ameche, singing motion picture and radio actor, was one of the early Derby arrivals from Hollywood. Monte Weil, who has several horses training here, leased the services of jockey W. C. Huff from Miss Judy Johnson. In a private transaction at Churchill Downs Wednesday morning, Maderis Dupuy bought the three-year-old McAllister from S. G. Baker, Sr. McAllister, which has never faced the starter, is a half-brother to Janice. Former jockey Norman LeBlanc brought four horses from Keeneland to Douglas Park and the stable will be augmented by five more next week.
