t • ■ » ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■•■ Kentucky Derbys of Past From 1895 to 1898, Inclusive * 4 In previous editions Daily Racing Form has reprinted the charts of the Kentucky Derby beginning with the Lawrin victory in 1938 back to 1919 when Sir Barton surprised the turf world by carrying off the coveted prize as a maiden, never having won a race until that eventful day in May. We believe our readers have found the reproduction of these charts of considerable interest and, but for the increasing number of meetings now under way or about to begin, these tabulations would be continued. However, such is not possible, though a brief summary of the Derbys of the past will be presented if space permits. The fifth group of summaries of the races from 1895 to 1898 are here shown: HALMA — 1895. Halma, Byron McClellands black son of Hanover, ridden by "Soup" Perkins, and favorite at 2 to 5, won easily in 1895 from Basso, Laureate and Curator. A summary of the race follows: HALMA— Blk. c, by Hanover — Julia L., by Longfellow 1 BASSO— B. c, by Falsetto — Surefoot, by King Alfonso 2 LAUREATE— Ch. c, by Siddartha— Mary J., by Respond 3 Time, 2:37 1-2. Also ran — Curator. Four started. Favorite — Halma. Winning owner — Byron McLellan. Breeder — Easton and Larrabie, Kentucky. Two-year-old form — 9 starts, 2 wins, 1 second, 2 thirds. BEN BRUSH— 1896. The next year Ben Brush won the Derby by his whiskers from Ben Eder and it was heralded as the greatest race for the event since Spokane beat Proctor Knott. Two-year-old form— 16 starts, 13 win3, 1 [ second, 1 third. TYPHOON H.— 1897. The succeeding year saw another duel for the Derby when J. C. Cahns Typhoon H. Garner defeated Headley and Nortons Ornament A. Clayton, the favorite, by a neck. The winner was a son of Top Gallant. Breeder — John B. Ewing, Tennessee. Two-year-old form — 18 starts, 8 wins, 6 seconds, 1 third. PLAUDIT— 1898. John E. Maddens Plaudit, son of Him-yar, ridden by Simms, beat Lieber Karl, the i 1 to 3 favorite, owned by John W. Schorr and ridden by T. Burns, a length after a hard drive in the race of 1898.
