Paddock Enclosure Greatly Enlarged— Three Sections of New Barns of Twelve Stalls Each Erected. WHEELING, W. Va., May 3.— One thousand feet of-wire fence and 100 gallons of paint were used in the major improvements made at Wheeling Downs in preparation for the 58th year of racing at the Wheeling Island plant. The West Virginia Jockey Club, organized in 1937, has made many changes at the local track and with each meeting the course becomes more attractive. Today it is all decked out in a new dress of cream and green. The entire plant has been given the benefit of the paint brush. The biggest change, however, was the enlargement of the paddock enclosure. A thou-I sand-foot fence has been erected from the north end of the grandstand In a semicircle enclosing the jockeys quarters and paddock and connecting with the buldings at the south end of the clubhouse. NO PASS-OUT CHECKS This improvement will eliminate the necessity of pass-out checks being given fans to permit them to move from the lawn and grandstand to see the horses being prepared for the races. Once a patron is admitted through the main gate at the home stretch turn, there will be no further need of passing gatemen. Two twelve-foot openings have been made in the new fence to permit parking by offl-■ cials behind the grandstand and to admit Turf Club members cars to a special parking lot south of the clubhouse and outside the paddock enclosure. Three sections of new barns, each with twelve stalls, were also constructed during the past month. They are located just be-L hind the new paddock enclosure and will have tent tops. These barns will again make the Downs stall capacity 400, replacing sta-L ble space formerly used alongside the swim-L ming pool. ♦
