ARIEL HANDICAP TO EXPLODED 1 6. D. Widener Colorbearer Defeats 1 Class "O" Horses at Jamaica. Sandy Bill Essays a Mile and Seventy Yards , and Is Beaten After Nine Straight Victories. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 3— George D. Wideners Exploded was winner of the best ] race of a wintry afternoon at Jamaica today. 1 This was a gallop at a mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds of class "C," and 1 it was christened the Ariel Handicap. The son of Chance Shot was ridden by Don 1 Meade and was doing his best at the end to score over Mrs. Warren Kaines American i Daisy, with Samuel D. Riddles Get Off tak- ■ ing third from Chip In. Get Off was the ; choice of the company, while Exploded was i second choice, going to the post at 16 to 5. • It was an interesting day of sport that i was offered, but the conditions were dis- ; agreeable for the small chowd that was out, i with a cold wind blowing over the course all , afternoon. In the feature handicap the start was a good one and, after Saving Grace had beaten the others from the stalls, he gave way to Get Off before the back stretch was reached. As Longden went into command with the Riddle colt, Dupps moved after him with Chip In and Saving Grace dropped to third, with American Daisy in close attendance. Exploded had left the starting post slowly and he was last of the seven that raced, but was galloping strongly in that position. CARRIES CHIP IN ALONG. Get Off carried Chip In along at a pace that soon put him away, but he had no sooner taken care of that challenger than American Daisy went after him and he did not have a chance to take a long breath between challenges. In the meantime, Exploded was steadily making up ground and when the head of the stretch was reached he had circled around until it was evident he would be in the contention. American Daisy hung right to Get Off until the colt weakened in the final furlong, but by that time Exploded was sweeping up on the outside and he was right with the American Flag filly in the final twenty •yards. There was a lively duel in the closing strides, but Exploded proved gamer to win going away by a neck. American Daisy had saved the place from the tired Get Off by three lengths and Chip In was well back of these. The winning streak of Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Sandy Bill was broken in the mile and seventy yards of the fourth race when he was run down by Watersplash, from the Millsdale Stable, and J. D. Norris White Ginger took third from Mrs. M. Breiners Charming Herod. The only other starter was First Entry. Sandy Bill was the choice, while Watersplash paid 2 to 1, being second in demand. SANDY BILL BEATEN. Sandy Bill had won nine races in a row. Six of them constituted his entire campaign for last year, when he was brought back to I competition by Hirsch Jacobs after being away two years. Then this year he had won three races at the present meeting. All of • these races were at six furlongs, where the [ son of Wise Counsellor was invincible, as [ placed by his astute trainer. In todays race he was asked to go a mile and seventy yards and it proved beyond him. Ronnie Nash, who had the mount, sent the 1 old fellow away from the gate and permitted him to race along at his own pleasure. His speed carried him into a lead of a ; dozen lengths in the first half mile and it did not seem possible he would be run down. He was going easily and apparently in hand. Charming Herod was in second place in the early racing and Watersplash followed him closely and under a snug restraint as James made no effort to go after Sandy Bill. At the head of the stretch the old fellow was still lengths to the good, but by that time Watersplash had come away from Charming Herod and she was moving on Sandy Bill. It was not until the final furlong that Sandy Bill collapsed so badly that the mare ran him down readily to win by three lengths, Sandy Bill was four lengths before White Ginger, which came along to easily take third from Charming Herod. NASH ON WINNER. After being beaten on five favorites Tuesday, Ronnie Nash began the day well when he rode B. F. Whitakers Bouncalong to vie-; tory over the maiden juveniles in the opening five furlongs dash. The son of Whisk-albng won by a big margin over C. H. Knebelkamps White Hope, with Oyersupply, from the Snow White Stable, beating Golden Rapier for third. Gaudy, the favorite in this, after being away slowly, never reached a contending position. There was an unfortunate accident in this when Milo Shields Staff Sergeant, when in a contending position on the stretch turn, suddenly stumbled along for a few paces and fell, dying shortly after. Don Meade jumped clear and escaped injury. Star of Dondra was first to show the way, but Bouncalong was right after her and he - soon stepped to the front to never afterwards be seriously threatened. In the stretch he increased his lead until he crossed the line with a winning margin of five lengths. White Hope met with some slight interference when moving up, but in the final furlong, when he found clear sailing, he finished well to save the place by three parts of a length from Oversupply, which had been steadily making up ground. William Wick was particularly unfortunate when he had made a claim for Staff Sergeant, at ,500, receiving a dead horse. B. F. Christmas, who has been doing well for himself with a string of platers, added another purse to his list when Mintson, ridden by F. Faust and under the top weight of 124 pounds, led home a field of platers in the second, a six furlongs dash. He went to the post at 6 to 1 and it was W. H. Berris Early Evening, the favorite, which took the place in a camera finish with J. Summers Perfect Peace. Izur Zuri was fourth. There was some delay at the post, for which Perfect Peace was to blame. He was finally sent outside the stalls and when the start came was last away. Ronnie Nash won his second race of the day when he had the mount on Charles H. Thieriots Ebony Fly in the third, another dash at six furlongs for platers. This was confined to three-year-olds and the daughter of Flying Ebony was always the choice, going to the post at 9 to 10. It was a welcome break in the long string of favorite defeats. Mrs. Vaughan Flannerys Carraigeen raced to the place, with William Wicks Cherolize easily taking third from Ching-Ling. Don Meade rode his second winner in a row when he scored with William H. Berris Boston Fair in the six furlongs sixth, after having taken the feature with Exploded. In this, a dash for maidens, the son of Bos-tonian was the favorite and he was also much the best of the company, winning by a wide margin over Mrs. E. Grahain Lewis Pharo Warrior, with Samuel D. Riddles Deck taking third from Gino Rex.
