SKY LANTY ACCOUNTS FOR DETROITS INAUGURAL MORCARINE IS SECOND Winner One of Outsiders in Wagering on Headline Contest. Gallops Three-Quarters Mile in 1 :13, Fastest Time of Day for Distance — Fifteen Thousand Present. DETROIT, Mich., May 20.— Despite threatening weather, a crowd estimated at 15,000 welcomed the return of thoroughbred racing to the Fair Grounds course of the Detroit Racing Association here today. Showers fell during the running of the fourth race, but they had little or no effect on the track, which was left in a good condition following showers this morning and early last night. The crowd filled the boxes and reserved seat sections and the overflow on the terraces and lawns augurs well for a successful forty-nine days of spring and summer racing. With horses assembled from Maryland, ..New York, New England, Ohio and Kentucky, the public had little luck in locating the winners, but there were no real big surprises. Lady Flash, flaunting R. B. Allens colors, chalked up the first victory for the favorites when she was an easy winner of the fourth race, a six furlongs dash for better grade platers. Show Up was the runner-up, three lengths back of the winner and a half of a length before Marbold, the third horse. Mar-bold had the early speed, but the winner drove past him entering the stretch to establish a three lengths lead, which proved to be her winning margin. WINS BY LENGTH. Sky Lanty, one of the sprinting stars of West Coast racing and very consistent during the Hot Springs season, was a handy winner of the Inaugural Handicap, top race of the program. Setting his own pace, the four-year-old daughter of Sir Lanny carried the Gillespie Land and Irrigation Company colors to the end of six furlongs slightly more than a length before Walter Ridenours Morcarine, and Imperial Sir was third, a length farther back. It was a surprise score, Night Editor, the top weight under 115 pounds, being listlessly handled and a well-beaten eighth, and Candescent, the second choice, only made up enough ground to be in fifth position at the end. Hasty Star, like Morcarine one of the four three-year-olds to start, chased the winner to the final furlong, where Morcarine came on to wear her down and be gaining on the winner at the end. Little Drift held .a commanding position while saving ground from the start, but Candescent began very slowly and was never a factor. Under 113 pounds, the second-high weight and top burdened by the scale, Sky Lanty ran the distance in 1:13, the fastest time of the afternoon. She returned 7.80 for each straight. Straight Thru was the runner-up, a half-length back and six lengths before Detroit Bull, the favorite and third horse. Only five started, with Golden Era having the speed to carry him into the van entering the final six furlongs. Straight Thru was rushed forward on the outside to wear down Golden Era, but he was unequal to the task, and the winner came on to take command when inside the final furlong and win drawing away. Although Detroit Bull received slight interference when Straight Thru came over, it was not enough to eliminate him, and the finish found him soundly beaten.
