I I ! J I , TATTERDEMALION WINS STAKE Accounts for ,500 Added Governors Handicap at Suffolk Downs. Defeats War Minstrel in Rousing Stretch Drive — Governor Saltonstall Guest of Honor — 33,000 Persons Present. BOSTON, Mass., May 20.— Thomas J. Healeys Tatterdemalion closed with a great rush in the stretch to win the ,500 Governors Handicap, which featured the first Saturday of sport at Suffolk Downs long meeting. He completed a mile in the good time of 1:38%. The winner was given a rousing stretch ride by Eddie Arcaro, one of the nations leading jockeys, and was drawing away with every stride as he took the measure of Mrs. Emil Denemarks War Minstrel by two and one-half lengths. R. A. Moores Clodion, after being far back early and forced to race wide when making his bid, landed third, two and one-half lengths off the runner-up. A head back of him, Pagliacci finished fourth. Governor Saltonstall of Massachusetts was the guest of honor today and presented the Governors Trophy to the winning owner after the race. A tremendous throng was on hand for the sport, which was decided under sunny skies, and over a fast racing strip. Suffolk Downs officials gave the official attendance as 33,000. GREAT HORSE RACE. From the start to the sixteenth post the Governors Handicap was a great horserace. Up to that point it might have been won by any of half a dozen horses in the field of nine. But at the sixteenth post Tatterdemalion asserted his superiority, sweeping past and drawing away from tired horses. Infidox assumed command as they went to the clubhouse turn and went into the back stretch a length in front of Sun Inplay, with Pagliacci a close third. The favored Sun Egret moved to third place as they neared the far turn. At , this point Infidox was through and Sun Inplay took command briefly as they circled for home. But War Minstrel had begun his move after the leaders and as they straightened away for the drive to the wire it was War Minstrel battling it out in front, with Tatterdemalion just a head off him. The latter had come driving up from sixth place in the space of an eighth of a mile and as they went past the eighth post he was fairly flying. Euclid LeBlanc went to work hard on War Minstrel as they charged to the sixteenth marker and his mount held on tenaciously. But a sixteenth out Tatterdemalion raced to a clear lead and began to increase his advantage with each stride. He left no doubt of his superiority. CLODIONS BID TOO LATE. Clodion broke slowly and had difficulty in finding racing room as they rounded the clubhouse turn and entered the far lane. McCombs guided him to the outside1, but the son of Pharamond II. did not really begin to run until they were nearing the sixteenth post. There he came fast, but the bid was too late. Pagliacci battled it out in all the pace and died fighting. His race was a good one. Sun Egret was well within striking distance at the far turn, but dropped back steadily after that. *
