FAIRMOUNT CROWDED !• . Grandstand and Club House Well Filled Before Opening Race. Gaming Noses Out Be Discreet for Honors in Third Race — Viernes Santo in Popular Score. COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 20— Although skies were partly overcast, the sun broke through occasionally during the afternoon and. there was a hint of summer heat in the air which brought the sport lovers of this section out in lighter clothing to view the excellent program of eight races presented today at Fairmount Park. Long before the horses were dispatched postward for the first race, the grandstand and club house enclosure were well filled, an estimated 15,000 being on hand to cheer the winners, of each event on the card, and thrill to the excitement of closely contested races. Possibly the largest crowd of the meeting was on hand when the field for the feature paraded postward. In this event, which included Down Under, John Francis and Khar Fair, nine accepted the issue, the bulk of the publics support rested with Fast Move, Brown Ben, a recent surprise winner, and - Prince Argo, the speedy son of Happy Argo, i 1 which races for "Butsey" Hernandez and j which has become a favorite with the local j fans. The feature was to be decided over j the six furlongs sprint course for a purse of ,200. EXCITING CONTEST. The finish of the second race brought the i crowd to its feet tense with excitement when j J. A. Kinard, Jr.s, Gaming, guided capably | by jockey Arthur Gaither, which was sent j forward on the outside of the field in the closing stages of the run for the wire, got up in time to overhaul Be Discreet and flash past the finish a winner by a nose decision. Be Discreet held to second place with a two lengths margin over Strolling Miss. Muri-ellyn finished fourth in the nine-horse field which went six f urlongs. Viernes Santo scored a popular and easy victory when the J. It. Carson racer reached the end of the six furlongs of the third event a length and a half before Double Dip. The latter, coming from far back in the stretch run, reached second place a head in front of Linter. The "Daily Double" combination of Gaming, victor in the second race, and Viernes Santo, winner of the third, paid 44.80 to those holding tickets on the pair.
