BAR FLY WINS QUEENS CUP Triumphs by a Neck Over Daggers Drawn in Feature at Woodbine. Parkwood Stable Recently Purchased Gelding From E. R. Bradley— Bunty Lawless Wins Secondary Attraction. TORONTO, Ont., May 20— Bar Fly, four-year-old gelded son of Black Toney from the Parkwood Stable, was a popular victor in the running of the ,000 added Queens Cup Handicap, feature of the opening day of the Ontario Jockey Club meeting. Shouldering the impost of 116 pounds, the former E. R. Bradley colorbearcr came from back of the : pace of J. E. F. Seagrams Daggers Drawn and held a neck lead at the end of the mile and seventy yards. Daggers Drawn, after setting the pace, was a length and one-half : before G. M. Hendries Ridge. Medway Stables ■ Ghost Queen was fourth, two lengths : farther back. R. S. McLaughlin and trainer F. Gilpin . were presented with the cup by A. E. Dy-mcnt, • president of the club, following the i running. A crowd of 15,000 was on hand for the s initial days program. Cool, showery weather • prevailed for the sport, with the track remaining in a fast condition. FAST START. There was no delay at the start of the ! feature and starter Rowe sent the field away , in a half minute. Bar Fly dwelt slightly as ; they went to the first turn. Ridge came over . slightly and Ghost Queen was eased back, while Bar Fly slipped through on the inside. As they went to the bade stretch Daggers Drawn had taken a clear lead while Bar Fly raced slightly before Ridge. William Palmer raced with Ghost Queen, and Unfailing, which had lost ground at the turn, dropped to last place. These positions were maintained to the final quarter, with the exception of Bar Fly, which drew clear of Ridge. Coming to the stretch Schmidl sent Bar Fly up on the outside of Daggers Drawn. Entering the final furlong the pair raced side by side and were battling gamely. When the final strides were reached Bar Fly forged ahead and at the end was a neck in advance. Ridge held third place throughout and was well clear of Ghost Queen. Bunty Lawless, four-year-old son of Ladder — Mintwina and winner of the 1938 running of the Kings Plate, carried the silks of W. F. Morrissey to their second victory of the afternoon in the running of the Hamilton Plate Handicap. Ridden by C. McTague, the Morrissey star raced the six furlongs in 1:12% to win easily, two lengths in advance of H. C. Hatchs Suffern. The latter was a length and one-half in advance of the Cosgrave Stables Mona Bell, which was the same margin before Parkwood Stables Donosiris.
