IT. S. SUBMARINE SINKS PORTSMOUTH, N. H., May 23.— According to word sent ashore by members of the United States submarine Sculpin, sixty-two men were trapped in the United States submarine Squalus, off the Isle of Shoals, in 240 feet of water. Communication with members of the # sunken submersible was maintained by means of a telephone to a buoy. A valve near the crew room, which failed to work, is reported to have kept the submarine from rising.
