BELMONT MID-WEEK FEATURE Hollis Stakes for Platers Attracts Fourteen Overnight Eligibles — May Have Gross of ,500. NEW YORK, N. T., May 23.— For a midweek feature this afternoon the offering of the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park is -the Hollis, a purse for platers under claiming conditions and of six furlongs through the Widener course. Fourteen have been named for this, the twenty-fifth renewal of the prize, and, should they all go to the post, will have a gross value of ,500. Hal Price Headleys Preeminent, winner of the Toboggan Handicap of 1937, is the top weight of the party, with 126 pounds as his impost. Mrs. G. C. Winfreys Bill Farns-worth, which recently showed a return to good form, comes next, under 123 pounds. Old Rosebush, which races for Mrs. Anthony Pelleteri, is to take up 120. He was seasoned in New Orleans and has not come back to his winter form, but is well suited at six furlongs and may go well. W. E. Boeing has a pair named in Air Chute and Roy T., and other fast ones engaged are Woodberry, Mahdi, Be Quaint and Neap. Indications are that the renewal will be a good one. Last year the Hollis was won by North Riding, from the Howe Stable. Miss Merriment and Sation were two of the notable winners of previous runnings of the Hollis. What is of more importance to the hunting set and those of the turf and field enclosure is the renewal of the Charles L. Appleton Memorial Steeplechase. This stake is a cross-country test over the short course that is a testimonial to one of the most accomplished riders of some years ago, and it invariably brings an excellent contest. With ,500 in added money and with seven named for this renewal, it will gross ,700 should they all go to the post. Mrs. Payne Whitneys Sailor Beware, winner of the International Steeplechase recently, is asked to shoulder 158 pounds, but he will probably be the choice of the field. National Anthem takes up 151 pounds and the others scale down to the light weight of 135 to be carried by Farndale. Mrs. Gwladys Whitney is represented by Brant. The others of the company are Snobby Scamp, Buck Langhorne and Sea Ted.
