New England Handicap and Winthrop Purse Supplementary Features — Pompoon Among the Eligibles. BOSTON, Mass., June 23.— What may well be the largest field ever to start at Suffolk Downs is entered for the inaugural running of the Myles Standish Stakes, for two-year- old colts and geldings, tomorrow. There are seventeen entered, and unless late scratches remove several from the field, it will be I | necessary for three horses to start from out- I side the barrier. The starting gate accom- modates but fourteen horses. In the Massachusetts Handicap of two years ago, when the gate then had but twelve stalls, it became necessary to build two additional stalls for that race. Since that time the new gate with its fourteen stalls has been added to the equipment at Suffolk Downs. It is a great array of horseflesh which goes to the post in three big races at Suf-l folk Downs tomorrow. In addition to the feature of the day with its purse of ,000 added, which has attracted some of the best two-year-olds in the nation, there are two other featured races which would ordinarily occupy all of the spotlight. CRACK FIELD. The New England Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, at a mile and a sixteenth, for a purse of ,500, brings such outstanding horses as Pompoon, Bar Fly, Pagliacci, Silent Witness, Swahili and War Minstrel into competition. It will be the first appearance in a race here this season of Pompoon, highly regarded as a possible winner of the Massachusetts Handicap, which has been assigned top weight of 126 pounds in this race. Bar Fly, now in the Frank Gilpin stable, but a former Col. E. R. Bradley horse, draws 114 pounds. Pagliacci, which was defeated last week in a photo finish, has 109 pounds. War Minstrel and Silent Witness each get in with 107 pounds, while Swahili is in with only 95 pounds. Then there is the Winthrop, the third race of the afternoon, which has drawn for its entrants Peter Argo, Time Beater, Ace Call, Top Queen, Bonny Imp, Holton and Love-? day, all of which have proved their mettle at Suffolk Downs. Peter Argo, originally entered for the New England Handicap, is given top weight of 116; Ace Call and Love-, day each have 111 pounds, Bonny Imp and Holton each draw 109. Time Beater will have only 102 pounds, and Top Queen has the light package of 99 pounds. TEST FOR JUVENILES. The card is headed by the Myles Standish Stakes, the five-furlong test for two year-" • old colts and geldings, which, as has been 1 said, has drawn the record list of seventeen ] for the start of tomorrows feature. I Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Skin Deep has ; | | been shipped here for this race. W. E. Boe-; . ing shipped Dodger. J. H. Louchheim has his well regarded two-year-olds, Smart Bet and Pharanor, entered in this event, and many other good juveniles are entered to go in this race, which promises to eclipse any-a thing yet staged at the Downs this year. Racing secretary McLennan has given Vanderbilts Skin Deep top weight of 122 j pounds. This horse will have Lee Hardy riding. It falls to the lot of a New England horse and owner to draw second weight, for B. N. Kanes Halcyon Boy goes postward with 117 pounds. Nine of the horses entered have been assigned 114 pounds. Secretary McLennan has as yet received no word from The Jockey Club that a change in the name of Dos has been grant-r_ ed, and unless such word is officially given before tomorrow, the Maemere two-year-old I . will go to the post at Suffolk still bearing the original name.
