CRAVAT WINS BROOKLYN Gallops One Mile and an Eighth in 1 :481/5 at Aqueduct. Betters Johnstowns Dwyer Time by One -Fifth of a Second — Outsider, Our Ketcham, Finishes Second. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 24.— Cravat added his name today to the roll of illustrious horses which have won the famous , old Brooklyn Handicap. And, in so doing, he equalled the best time ever turned in over the Queens County Jockey Club course for nine furlongs, negotiating the distance in 1 : 1 8 J .-. . That time was one-fifth of a second faster than Johnstown made in winning the Dwyer Stakes. Cravat carried 126 pounds, three pounds more than the four-year-old Discovery packed when he hung up the track record i winning the same stake in 1935 for the second time. Second honors in the fifth-first renewal of the Brooklyn were earned by the despised outsider, Our Ketcham, from the John B. Partridge stable. The light weight in the field, under 101 pounds — he carried four pounds overweight — this four-year-old bay son of Spanish Play and Bunt was beaten a ; length for first money. In third place, a I length behind Our Ketcham, was Maxwell Howards The Chief, four-year-old son of Pennant and Transit. He headed Myror. Selznicks Cant Wait out of the show award, j Thanksgiving was fifth. Handcuff sixth,! Fighting Fox seventh and Heelfly eighth: and last. Between 14,000 and 15,000 devotees of thor- oughbred racing turned out to make Brook- lyn day — once one of the most important days in eastern racing — a notable occasion. The race, because of its priceless traditions, Continued on thirty-eighth page. The clubhouse was crowded to capacity, | as was the big grandstand. So large was the crowd that the betting rings were overtaxed. The weather was perfect and the track at its very best. The crowd had been keyed to highest pitch long before the Brooklyn came up and chiefly through the scintillating per- J formances in the Cagliostro Handicap, a hurdle event, which was the second event, and the supporting feature, of Joe W. Browns Brown Prince III., the 9 to 10 , favorite. This fellow won in handy fashion, ! | running his string of consecutive victories to three. NO WITHDRAWALS. Contrary to expectations, none of the eight i overnight entrants in the Brooklyn was j withdrawn. Up to the deadline for withdrawals it was reported that Our Ketcham j would come out and run in the sixth event. | As things turned out. Our Ketcham not | only remained in the 0,000 added feature, I but he came mighty near winning first i money. Indeed, he flashed dazzling speed 1 under Ronnie Nash and out on the head end I for a mile and a sixteenth he whizzed along ! in these fractions :22%, :45%, 1:10% and j [1:35%. In spite of his recent convincing triumph ! , at Belmont Park in the mile and a quarter j Suburban Handicap, Cravat was permitted I to go postward in the Brooklyn at 3 to 1,1 co-choice with the Belair Studs Fighting Fox, which on Saturday a week ago scored j a breath-taking triumph in the seven fur-! longs Carter Handicap and set a new track I j record for the distance. I HEELFLY FRACTIOUS. Alfred G. Vanderbilts Heelfly, a notori- I ously bad post actor, delayed the start for j about four and one-half minutes, despite the ! ! fact no attempt was made to place him in j his stall. Starter George Cassity ordered ; j this Royal Ford— Canfli horse to the out-1 j side immediately he reached the post. As ; ; usual, the Vanderbilt representative wore a I hood over his eyes. When Joe W. Browns Brown Prince III. , was winner of the Cagliostro Hurdle Handicap it was his third victory here in as many starts and he stamped himself as the best hurdler that has been shown at the meet-1 ing. He was carrying seven pounds over his scale weight when his burden was 163 pounds and a solid favorite at 9 to 10. This son of Campanazo and Sinfonia is one of the Chilean importations that has made good and he may beat better horses than1 he met in this hurdle feature before the j end of the season.
