LARGE FIELD NAMED FOR ARLINGTON INAUGURAL a a Twenty -Three Horses in Overnight Entries — The Fighter at Top ♦ Johnstown May Be Invited to Make Attempt to Lower Equipoises Worlds Record for One Mile — Resurfaced Track Rated Very Fast ♦ ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., June 24.— The interest and attention of Chicago racing fans will be diverted over the week-end from Lincoln Fields, where a twenty-seven day meeting came to a close today, to Arlington Park, where a season of thirty days begins on Monday. Arlington Park, one of the finest courses in the country, has attracted some of the most fashionable stables in racing and, during the month at the palatial Northside track, turf devotees will see under colors many of the sports ranking stars. Eight stakes, beginning with Mondays Inaugural Handicap and highlighted by a renewal of the Classic, grace Arlingtons program, and it is reported that directors of the course hope to stage at least one exhibition against time, perhaps by the mighty Johnstown, hero of the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Withers and Dwyer Stakes. RACE AGAINST TIME. Although no definite announcement has been made, it is understood that William Woodward, Johnstowns owner, may be invited to send his powerful three-year-old out for an attack on the mile worlds record of 1:34-5, which Equipoise set here on June 30, 1932, as a final prep for his engagement in the rich Classic, to be staged this summer on July 22. Arlington Park executives say the racing strip here this year will be the fastest in many years. Since the last meeting was conducted here, 3,000 cubic yards of sand have been spread over the surface. With such footing in prospect, directors are more than eager to stage a spectacle such as Johnstown, the logical horse for such an exhibition, might give here. Upwards of 50,000 will be distributed among horsemen in prize money, and of this sum. 6,000 is added money to stakes. This total also includes generals awards to trainers of winners in races run at distances greater than a mile and a furlong. EAST VERSUS WEST. As in former years, Arlingtons racing looms as a struggle between the East and West. Among the approximately 1,200 horses which will be available for competition here, are the cream of the western stables, sharp and fit for the invasion of horses from the powerful establishments maintained by patrons of the Atlantic seaboard. The Classic, mid summer special for three-year-olds, heads a brilliant galaxy of stakes that includes, besides the Inaugural Handicap, the Arlington Futurity, the Lassie Stakes, the Matron Handicap, the Stars and Stripes Handicap, the Hyde Park Stake3, and the Arlington Handicap. Arlington Park also will be the testing ground for some of the countrys foremost jockeys," including John Oros, currently heading the American riding list; Johnny Longden, 1938 riding champion; Alfred Robertson; Chas. Kurtsinger; Carroll Bier- Continued on thirtieth page. 1 ■ • a LARGE FIELD NAMED FOR ARLINGTON INAUGURAL Continued from first page. man; Warren Yarberry, and many more. Some of the other riders of national repute who may be here at various times through the meeting to fill stakes engagements are Jimmy Stout, Geo. Seabo, Raymond Workman, Wayne Wright and Eddie Arcaro. Hailed as of the most beautiful racing grounds in America since the completion of its 40,000 improvement program this season, Arlington Park represents a striking picture of pastoral landscaping and immaculately appointed stands. The stands and stables have been redecorated in light shepherd and dark sylvan green, with the roofs and banks of seats contrasting in pom-peian red. Five hundred new seats have been added to the enclosure section, and a 100-table cocktail lounge has been set up out on the upper club terrace. Arlington Park has never looked more beautiful as patrons will find on their visit on Monday. NOMINATIONS HEAVY. Of the fifty-four horses which were nominated for the Arlington Inaugural Handicap, twenty-three were listed in the entries, suggesting one of the largest starting fields in the history of the race, if the track remains fast. Of those named for the stake, the top weight is W. F. Morgans The Fighter, which must shoulder 116 pounds, one more than Mrs. Emil Denemarks Higher Cloud will be asked to carry. Other speed merchants likely to be seen under colors in the seven-furlong sprint, to which a ,500 added purse is attached, are Drudgery, Easy Mon, Grass Cutter, Light-spur, Taxes, Tiger, Don Creole, Dolly Val, Dusky Prince, Olney, Floragina and Flying Lill. Post positions for this race were not drawn this morning because of the probability of some withdrawals at scratch time on Monday. The positions will be drawn Monday morning at which time most of those nominated are expected to remain in the field. Seven other attractive races grace the inaugural card which is scheduled to begin at 2:15 oclock. «
