DOS SURPRISES AT SUFFOLK Pays 1.20 After Winning ,000 Myles Standish Stakes. Race Marred by Jam and Runaway of Favored Dodger Before Start — Track Heavy. BOSTON, Mass., June 24.— Dos, recently purchased by the Maemere Farm, furnished a stunning surprise as he drove to victory by a neck in the Myles Standish Stakes, for juveniles, ,000 added feature of the weekend program at Suffolk Downs this afternoon. The winner, ridden by Harry Krovitz, paid 1.20 for a investment in the mu-tuels. He raced over a heavy track in 1:02% to defeat Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Skin Deep, which set the pace to the stretch. Miss C.*ardins Johnnie J., which took the lead briefly at the head of the stretch, wound up third, a length off the runner-up and half a length in front of Gala Quest. The race was marred by two incidents. The favored Dodger tossed Johnny Adams on the post parade and ran off to the stable area. When the field was at the three-eighths post in the race, there was a bad jam, with Smart Bet stumbling, Exarch being knocked back and Abrasion suffering interference. Gala Quest also ducked for the inside rail in the stretch but did not pile up any horses. POMPOON BEATEN. A crowd of 25,000, which had previously seen the heavily-backed Pompoon go down to a six-length defeat by Pagliacci, was at the track this afternoon. The course was heavy and holding from recent drenchings. The day was sunny but cool. Dos victory in the Myles Standish earned his owners ,970. A dozen horses went to the post in the race. Skin Deep streaked away from the gate in front and drew off to a lead of a length and a half with Halcyon Boy, Gala Quest i and Dodger well bunched behind him. At the three-eighths post the jam occurred and Skin Deep retained his advantage as the field piled up in back of him. Johnnie J. escaped the jam, came through to second place on the turn and took a brief lead in the stretch, where Skin Deep went wide. SKIN DEEP SECOND. Skin Deep recovered the lead at the eighth post. Shortly after this juncture, Gala Quest, running fourth, ducked for the rail but was rapidly straightened out. Dos, off well, had meanwhile taken second on the turn, dropped back third at the stretch and came extremely fast at the sixteenth marker to pass Skin Deep in the final strides and win inching away. Johnnie J., after looking a winner in the stretch, failed to keep up in the terrific drive from the sixteenth post home and was well beaten for the place. Skin Deep held on well after setting the pace and going wide. He is apparently gamer than most Balkos, for he came again in the stretch after being headed. Dodgers race could not have been a true one because of his impromptu gallop before it was run. Abrasion also had plenty of excuses.
