" 1 Galloway Proves Best in Berkley Comes Off Fast Early Pace To Lead Daily Dip by Three Lengths at Arlington Park ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 29. Dixianas Galloway, undei the steady handling of the veteran, Steve Brooks, was responsible lor a mild upset in the Berkley Purse here this afternoon. Coming from off a fast early pace and assuming command as if much the best, the colt scored by three lengths over H. Guy Bedwells Daily Dip, who downed Mrs. J. S, Letelliers Jack S. L. by a neck for the place. Fourth in the small field of six was J. H. Skirvins Nina Bruja, a mare from Argentina, who was making her first start in this country. Galloway, a brown four-year-old son oj Count Gallahad Tootsiecake, raced the seven furlongs over a muddy track in 1:25, under 114 pounds, while showing a definite fondness for the going. He was third choice in the betting that found Daily Dip and Jack S. L. commanding most of the speculative interest. Galloways price was .00. A crowd of 11,267 was in the stands and the weather, once again humid, was cloudy. Daily Dip Sprints into Command The field broke out of the chute in a line, and there was much maneuvering for position, with Gay Secret, Galloway and Beau-kiss racing head and head. As the field neared the far turn, Daily Dip sprinted to the front and, when nothing at the time matched the move, it seemed that the top end of the purse belonged to Bedwell. But, Brooks had not yet made his move. He waited until the winning post was in sight, then drove up on the outside, wrested the lead and drove out his mount the remainder of the distance, to win by three lengths. Brownell Combs well-bred Riot, winner of his most recent race in easy style, moved up several notches for the Westchester Purse, secondary feature, but came right back to score. The three-year-old son of , Whirlaway Miss Dogwood assumed command immediately after the start of the Continued on Page Three JACK HODGINS Sent out Dixianas Galloway to take down honors in yesterdays Berkley Purse at Arlington Park. Galloway Proves Best in Berkley Comes Off Fast Early Pace To Lead Daily Dip by Three Lengths at Arlington Park Continued from Page One mile and one-eighth race, opened up a lead of several lengths down the backstretch, and around the final turn, and then was placed under heavy punishment by Freddie Smith, to win. Augustus and Nahms Tri Step, showing decided improvement over his previous race, closed smartly to the stretch and just failed to hit the mark by a half length. The gelding was absolutely last along the backstretch, and didnt get into his best stride until on the final turn. The Lex-brook stables Showdown forced the pace for the most part, but gave up in the final phases but managed to take the show. Keenly disappointing the gathering was the effort shown by the favorite, Pennon, from the Hal Price Headley stable. The colt was a contender early, made a good gesture on the turn, then tired badly. The Calumet Farms Flying Disc, one of the few Calumet juveniles to start this year, attracted some attention in the third race but the hefty, big-boned son of Sun-again Lady Peace failed to get away with the others at the start, and was virtually eliminated. However, he-did manage to finish fourth, after finding his top stride during the last eighth of a mile, where he began belatedly to fly past his foes. It is likely that he will display considerable improvement with more education, and over longer distances. Easy Inning Scores Winner of the five-furlong dash was Mrs. William H. Veenemans Easy Inning, an Easy Mon youngster who had shown some promise in his lone previous start. J. H. Rouses Choice Cut gained the place from Edward E. Voynows Marse George. Ronnie Nash pegged along in back of the early pace with Easy Inning, made his bid after straightening away for the drive and was beginning to draw away at the finish to win by a half-length. Young Eldon Nelson turned in an exceptional ride in the fourth, when he brought the Woolford Farms Accentuate down to the line a half length in front of M. M. Hellermans Debaby, while Maidal Ranchs Kilayr finished third. The three-year-old daughter of Lawrin Vice Versa was making th esecond start of her career. She was beaten by Mud Guard and Debaby at Washington Park, and with that race under her belt, she was a much better horse today. Nelson soon had her in second place in back of Debaby going down the backstretch and around the turn, but had to keep her under constant punishment for just when it seemed that she was to make up ground shed drop back slightly. It was in the last eighth of a mile that Nelson went at the filly, whip, hand and heel, and she caught Debaby tiring and forged to the front in the last few strides. The Woolford miss raced the six furlongs in 1:15, and paid .80.
