Primer Primer Brings Brings Out Out Field Field of of Eight; Eight; My My Request, Request, Escadru Escadru Go Go in in Shevlin Shevlin Ocean Drive Likely Favorite Over OF Skipper, Ky. Colonel Hooper Juvenile Will Have Olympia as Running Mate in 0,000 Arlington Feature ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 29. Frederick W. Hoopers Ocean Drive, a fleet colt who has strong aspirations for the rich Arlington Futurity and other important fixtures on the Arlington-Washington program, will get an excellent opportunity to make amends for his recent defeat in the Hyde Park Stakes tomorrow. The brown son of Coldstream Annabell Lee, by Volta, heads a sprightly field of eight juveniles in the 0,000 Primer Stakes, five and one-half furlongs dash that is the first of three stakes on the local program this week. Ocean Drive was lauded as a world-beater after a series of brilliant workouts before the meeting opened here. He had started twice in Florida, and emerged with top prize in the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes. So, on opening day in the Hyde Park, he was backed down to even money, in spite of the fact that his foes were for the most part, youngsters who had been thoroughly seasoned with more recent races. Gave Way in Hyde Park During the running of the Hyde Park, the colt flashed all sorts of swiftness in the early running, but as he neared the finish he began to shorten his quick strides and was beaten by Provocative, from the Mrs. Emil Denemark stable. Although his effort in the Hyde exploded any claims to invincibility, Ocean Drive undoubtedly will be given another chance by the favorite players. It is quite possible that he will be ably assisted by his stablemate, Olympia, who has shown a number of fine performances since he embarked on his career during the spring at Keeneland. In addition to the Hooper pair, the others are: Mrs. Emil Denemarks On the Eye and Blue Night, Mrs. Ada L. Rices Admiral Lea, John MarschsOl Skipper, Joseph A. Goodwins Ky. Colonel, and William H. Veenemans Irish Sun. One interesting angle of the Primer is that three of the probable contestants are co-holders of the track record at Washington Park for five-eighths of a mile. They are Olympia, Ky. Colonel and Ol Skipper. The first two broke the mark when they finished in a dead heat in the Joliet Stakes, and Ol Skipper was third, three and one-half lengths in back of them. Several days later, however, Ol Skipper came back with a smashing triumph in an allowance race, and tied the standard of :58ys. Sensational Workout It is this same Ol Skipper who is expected to prove troublesome in the Primer. The locally-owned colt also raced in the recent Hyde Park, but showed little in the way of speed. He broke in the middle of the pack, and was unable to improve his position. However, he proved to his connections and dockers that he had not lost any of his speed when he worked five-eighths of a mile through the mud in :58 from the gate, as his final serious prep for the Primer. He went the quarter in :22 and the half in :45 and it was acclaimed as one of the most, sensational moves ever recorded in this state. Bob McGarvey, the Denemark trainer, who always has been noted for his ability to develop ranking juveniles, may send out a pair of keen runners in Blue Night and On the Eye. Both have shown signs of first class speed in their previous races, Continued on Page Three i b : I . , l b r I 5 My Request and Escadru Go In Shevlin at Aqueduct Continued from Page One Bostwicks Stunts and Mrs. J. T. Maloneys Big If. Of this group, The Dervish won his last start, beating Jet Black, among others: Newsweekly beat a band that included Quarter Pole; Noble Hero followed two triumphs, including one over Safe Arrival. With a dull race in the Kent at Delaware, Control succumbed by a nose to Pugit in a sprint last week in a race in which Big If finished fourth at even money. Jet Black does happen to be a brother to Double Jay and an upset from this quarter should not cause too much eyebrow elevation. The Shevlin has been won by such good horses as Victorian nad Jack High, while By Jimminy and Wildlife followed triumphs in this test with victories in the richer and more important Dwyer. Maine Chance Farms Jacomar set the local track mark of 1:42 when winning the Shevlin of 1940, while such other winners as Sweepster and King Cole are remembered with some respect. Last year Greentree Stables Blue Border scored his only stakes victory of the season in this race. Should either My Request or Escadru perform to expectation tomorrow, they will at least rank with the best previous winners of the stake, on their lifetime records. Both would be regarded, along with King Ranchs Better Self, who is awaiting the Dwyer, as potential leaders of the three- I year-old division in any year that did not include such a colt as Citation.
