Gotham Trotting Associations Donate ,500 to Runyon Fund WESTBURY, N. Y., June 29. Thanks to the generosity of the Old Country and Nassau Trotting Associations, operators of popular Roosevelt Raceway, the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund last night was enriched by ,500, one of the largest single contributions received by the cancer combatting charity to date. This donation represented the Old Country Associations share of the pari-mutuel wagering on the horses who competed in the appropriately-named "Damon Runyon Memorial Fund Special," fifth race on an interesting program which was presented despite a severe thunderstorm which soaked the racing strip but, aside from causing a few late scratches, failed to mar the sport to any appreciable extent. Nelson Dunstan, Daily Racing Form columnist, the stage and radios Jane Pickens and Metropolitan Operas Robert Merrill participated in the presentation ceremonies in the winners circle following the running of the Runyon Special, which was won by William T. Elliotts Clever Kitty, driven by R. Plaxico, who received a silver cigarette case as a memento of the occasion. Dunstan has raised close to 00,000 for the Runyon Fund in his role as that organizations turf representative. Shortly before the Tunning of the sixth race, the association announced the receipt of a telegram from Walter Winchell, founder of the Runyon Fund, in which he thanked the track for its contribution and said "the real winners tonight are the thousands of people who are victims of cancer."
