Battle Battle H H Drives Drives to to Popular Popular Victory; Victory; Lyceum Lyceum Annexes Annexes Count Count Fleet Fleet Purse Purse Creep Mousie Runs? ♦ Second at Downs Clay Filly Finishes Fast to Be Almost Length in Clear; Balsa Makes It Two in Row By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 8. — Lyceum, a homebred daughter of Bull Lea and Colosseum, carried Charlton Clays silks to a game and well-deserved victory here today in the Count Fleet Purse, Responding with a fine burst of speed during the stretch run under Gerald Porchs capable handling, the Clay filly sped to the end of the six-furlong feature with a three-quarters length advantage over Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Creep Mousie. Just a half length away, Augustus and Nahms Bourbon Blaze, early pacemaker, took the show award and he was a length on Max Mar-morsteins Sonny M. for that end of the purse. Lyceum carried 120 pounds under the conditions of the Count Fleet, which matched seven sophomores, and he moved right along in his sprint effort, registering a neat 1:11% on the fast footing. No better than third choice in the totalisator to Raymond Ankenbauers favored One Twelve and John Marschs All Sable, the Clay miss was good for a .60 pay-off. Bourbon Blaze on Top Entering Stretch Lyceum was no better than fifth at the , start and she remained well back during the initial half mile, while Creep Mousie | and Bourbon Blaze dominated the running. j Bourbon Blaze held a short lead over the j Shaffer filly when the field settled into ] the home lane and Lyceum then began her . bid from third on the outside. During the run to the wire, Lyceum closed gamely under Porchs urging and, after she put Creep Mousie away, set sail for Bourbon Blaze, forging to the front near the final marker. Creep Mousie and Bourbon Blaze battled it out for the place with the former getting that end of the spoils while Sonny M. was a steady fourth. An active and surprisingly large crowd of approximately 10,000 took advantage of the splendid spring weather and witnessed the sport at the Central Avenue course. Although the track was a bit "off" for yesterdays program, it was fast today and the racing was quite formful and interesting, choices fairing rather well. Brown Hotel Stables Balsa, a game son Continued on Page Four 1 1 1 I J 1 1 i 1 ! Balsa, ridden by Ken Church, lacked early foot but flashed a brilliant stretch drive that was ample enough to beat out W. W. Stones fast -finishing Sandtop. A similar margin back, Mrs. Emil Denemarks Sky Tiger earned the short end of the purse, while M. A. Cocos Enthused finished fourth in the dash. Balsa responded readily when put to strong handling during the final quarter mile and, after the locally-owned victor put Sunny Deuce away, he had enough left to withstand Sandtop, who made his bid from the extreme outside. Sky Tiger held on in steady fashion to garner the show. The program was delayed when Adelard Lamoureuxs Our Freedom was injured at the post in the first race and had to be withdrawn and wagers on the gelding refunded. Mrs. John Gavin, Jr.s Monitress then kept the field for the second at the post for some time when she became fractious in the starting gate, unseated her rider and galloped off a slow quarter mile. Monitress, second choice in the latter offering, failed to show anything in the running after her rank behavior. John Stelles Engaged, ridden by William McKinley Cook, captured the six furlongs opener, defeating F. St. Charles Musician, J. Truetts Keep Moving and seven other ordinary platers. Engaged returned .80 straight. Edgey, handled by Darrell Madden, proved best of the nine two-year-old fillies that made up the field for the second, the Miss Joy Purse. Edgey scored for Mrs. Otto C. Neumanns The Farm Stable by a length and three-quarters while P. A. B, Widener, Ills Pines of Rome was second and Brown Hotel Stables More Cheers was along in time to salvage third money. Edgey was the*favorite at .60 and she stepped the five-eighths mile of the Miss Joy in :59%.
